Utility Cycling - Surfing!

Anyone else ride to the beach?

Just rigged up a board rack for my ride..works fine, but the board acts like a sail at times which could prove dangerous at high speeds

Now, i need some advice. When i'm surfing i'll be leaving my stuff (and bike) unattended for a period of time. Got any ideas/advice on how to lessen the chance of my stuff getting knicked?
One of my ideas was to lock my backpack onto my bike...and maybe lock up the zippers somehow?
And i plan on leaving the bike where i can see it from the surf...But this will be tough!
Also, i only plan on bringing a towel, clothes, (cheap) mobile phone, sunscreen, etc. Nothing of real value. The key for the lock will be attached to me out in the surf

Clever! Your backpack idea sounds good to me. Are there any signs you could lock your bike to on the beach?

Yep, there are a few (at the more popular beach i go to), and that was my plan.

At the other places that are 'off the beaten track' and require a walk to get to, most surfers leave their stuff unattended and unlocked....so those shouldnt be an issue


But alas, there are no good waves today :(

looks a little sketch.....id definitely worry about wind. also, i never realized surf boards were that huge.

Since you seem to like DIY, why not make a lockable box that you attach to you surf board rack instead of taking a backpack?

I've seen those rear mounted racks in stores but never in use. Around here the side mounted J hook type are pretty popular.

Most surfers I see leave their stuff in backpacks on the beach. Thievery is pretty common. Your bike is nicer than the norm.

You need a low trailer with a flat "bedroller" type of plastic box, bolted to the plywoodbase and locked with a code style padlock or tvo. Long towbar, board on top. Hide the seat + stem plus maybe quick lock axels innside the box. Difficult but not impossible to steal.

Buy a big dog and take it along with you to the beach.

How about an Xtracycle with a Longloader? I seem to remember a short video of a guy hauling a surfboard on an Xtracycle going down a wooded track in fine style.
