Can't even ride in a park without having to worry about idiot drivers.:(

Sadly, that's what it has come down to. I love this part of the article though:
"As for the driver of the car that started it all, he/she did not stick around to see how the two crumpled athletes on the pavement were doing, alas. (Roberts says that he wasn't sure the driver even knew what happened.)"
Classic.
Also, the entire article seems to be about this "accident", and the importance of wearing a helmet. I'm all for wearing a helmet (but it's the individuals choice, IMHO), but shouldn't the article have stressed more the fact that it wasn't an "accident", but the obvious fault of the "drivers"? Shouldn't the article be more about paying attention while behind the wheel? I guess not.
It's just another silly cyclist getting in the way of cars. Moreover, the only reason it got ANY coverage was because the cyclist happened to be an anchor at CNN. :(

I chase down cars in both Central and Prospect parks in NYC when I see them. I always give them hell about even being there as they don't belong there when the park is closed. In the places where they are allowed I've chased them down too as they frequently are still in the wrong lane. I've even yelled at the cops a few times for driving down the center lane when the park is closed, the bikes have to swerve to avoid them and it is NOT proper procedure.
I had an argument with a friend about bikes and cars in Prospect Park early this summer, she contending they should stay in 'their' lane, while she drove around the park. The bike lane when cars are allowed is fairly narrow, and it is common to pass other bikers in the car lane, I do it myself. "They have their lane, I have mine" is what she said. She has two wide lanes and we get 5 feet. Three weeks later, the signs went up that the park will be permanently closed to traffic in the off-peak direction during the few hours it is allowed at all. She always used it in the off-peak direction. A small victory for bikers, and I made sure she was informed. (It was all in fun) It is much better knowing that you only have to watch for cars in a small portion of the park now.
