tire clearance for dual-pivot caliper brakes

i've tried a few different search terms and couldn't find anything, but sorry if this is repetitive.
i don't do much cross racing, definitely not enough to warrant buying a cross bike (yet), but i'm doing a race in two weeks. the last one i used a mountain bike, and just didn't feel all too comfortable racing on it, so i'm planning on using my steel bianchi road bike (w/ the standard short reach dual pivot caliper brakes, which are allowed for this race). The course is fairly flat and isn't suppose to be that rough. however, I'm having trouble finding a good set of tires to use that will have clearance. I think i'll need something between 25-28mm that has some sort of tread, or knob. Does anyone have any reccomendations?

You might sneak a touring/audax tyre in, like a Schwalbe Marathon, or Panaracer Pasela. Since you are racing for fun, you could just go with the slicks...

Depends entirely on the bike and the particular brakes. I ran an older steel frame with Shimano 105 brakes with 32mm Speedmax for one season with no problems.

Start measuring things.

I ran 30c speedmax with some 105 dual pivots for my first cross season. The little injection hairs rub, but that's it. As Ronsonic says, the bigger issue may be frame/fork clearance.
