Should I let my 5yo kid get into BMX or should I wait a few more years?

Start 'em young.
my friend and I both started our boys at 5 - it's been a great experience for them.

I agree, start them young. My little guy loved going to the skate park when he was 4 and he got into racing when he was 6. Now that he is 8 I can not keep up with him.
Most BMX tracks have racing for kids 4 and up with tons of rewards for all competitors (candy bags and trophies), it is a great place for them to start. For the youngest or less experienced bunch they will have half track races over the easiest sections of the track as lots of the little kids don't want to have anything to do with the start gates.

I have to agree you need to start them young. I made a mistake by waiting tell I am 13 to start racing, I mean some of the 8 year olds beat me. :) . And its a good experience for them.
