Hello, I am planning on getting a cannondale tandem down the road but first want to try something with the lady to make sure we will ride a more expensive one. I found a Kent locally for $100 w/ a folded rear wheel, I was wondering the spacing (been searching can't find it anywhere) so I can find out how expensive/hard it'll be to find a replacement. Anyone know? Thanks!

My best Guess would be 135mm as in Mountain bike/comfort bike rim. Why not just measure it. Go to Wally world and measure if you need to. A rear rim should be $50 or less from a local bike shop I would think. You would then have $150 in the bike. For $250, you can get one brand new. It might be worthy of consideration.

why not have the wheel rebuilt using the existing hub? that way spacing won't matter and you'll probably get a better wheel when it's done

I was hoping it was 135 since I have a few of those laying around, but read that most tandems were in the range of 145-150. I can get a better wheel at the lbs for not much at all and probably sell the tandem for a few bucks more once I get the Cannondale. I guess I'll just need to pick it up and see.

I just picked mine up yesterday for under $240 at Walmart. I prefer not to shop there, but the shipping to the store was free. I looked around for a cheap started Tandem to see if I can get my wife riding more than 3 miles. My wife suffers from Asthma, and sometimes the rides are fine, but a bit of wind can take her out quickly so I hope a tandem is a way to get her outside riding more. If she ends up bailing on my at least I didn't spend well over a grand. If she ends up loving it, I will just have to find a way to buy a good tandem in the future. I was actually shocked at how descent the bike looked. The brakes and shifters are no worse than her $275 LBS Schwinn. Sure I had some assembly to do, but I don't mind that. I still have to adjust the brakes and the derailers, otherwise it is basically put together. even the finish was pretty descent. I would be hesitant to buy a used one for $100. I also have had excellent support in the recent past with my daughter's Co-Pilot (also made by Kent). The rear sprocket was bad and I was sent an entirely new bike because it failed in the first two weeks of ownership. Customer service was easy to reach and they didn't give me any grief. Quite suprising! I still need to get fenders and a rear rack. This spring I intend to use this as out shopping vehickle to go to the local grovery store (only 2.5 miles away).
