View Full Version : Worst weather?
33 degrees and raining last night as I rode home at 8 pm. Is there any weather in these parts worse than that?

Well, it could have been 31, sleeting, and windy. And w/ ice accumulating on the ground.

Hehehe. Just in between the two: 32*F, rain-ish sleet (or maybe sleet-ish rain), nothing aside from puddles on the ground, though.
Last year's first snow/ice storm caught me off-guard and I had to navigate the curved, 0.82mile long 8% downhill on 175th in Woodinville in a blizzard, with slushy ice on the road, and 1.75" street slicks. I clipped out of the pedals and used my feet for outriggers!

Yeah, it could have been worse, but last night was no picnic, that's for sure. When I left work at 6:00, it was about 37 degrees, with a S/SSE wind (the direction I ride into, of course) steady at 8-10 with gusts to 15 or so. It was a battle all the way. According to my heart rate monitor, I burned just over 1,150 calories on that ride. Normal is about 800.
But, hey, at least we're not in Eastern Washington :)

I rode in yesterday in a nice brisk morning, the cold is OK, wet is OK too. Caught a ride home with a collegue on the way home, did not feel like being both cold and wet.

Hey East Hill, I got the impression from an earlier thread that you worked at or near the airport and on the night shift. So, how was your commute yesterday?

Cold...dark...slow.
I'm not very fast when it's frosty on the ground, and I'm not very fast when it's dark and wet (the light reflections really bother me, I think it's a migraine thing).
I know you guys are used to commuting in the dark, but even with my strange hours I used to ride home in daylight. It's been tough getting used to the constant dark. I'm not entirely certain that I'm going to be up to the snowing at 4.30 am when it happens :( . Part of that is thinking about getting down the West Hill, and then getting back up the East Hill  ! I'm hoping for snow days on my days off so I don't have to think about it actually :o (I know, I'm embarrassed to say that!).

Hang in there. Only 25 more days until the Winter Solstice.
I ride up the West Hill every day. I used to do it from the valley in Renton; now I do it up Des Moines Way from Seattle. What route do you take up the East Hill? That's one heck of a ride!

Usual route up is to go on 208th, left at 92nd and up 200th. Sometimes I go straight up 200th, but I usually go right at 100th SE and then head up 204th to cross Benson, then head east to home.
It's a nice workout :) .
