I went out last Friday to buy myself a Honda Fit, but ended up coming home with a John Deere 5325 for the hubby. How did THAT happen??

My best story of this year concerns my parents. They retired to a small town in East Texas. Soon after moving their, they saw a need to help the less fortunate members of the community.
My father reopened a food pantry that helps lots of families there. He and my mother put in quite a bit of time each week working in a government food warehouse to earn credits for food to stock the pantry. They spend every Thursday at the pantry handing out food, clothes, whatever they can get donated.
Last week a local family called dad to let him know that for Christmas, they had decided to buy the food pantry a freezer instead of gifts for each other.
My father reopened a food pantry that helps lots of families there. They spend every Thursday at the pantry handing out food, clothes, whatever they can get donated.

Yes, I have a tendency to buy expensive things for myself around the holidays, too, don't know why. One year, many, many moons ago, I had to shell out practically every penny to my name for an engagement ring. Luckily sacrifices like that are usually only made once...

This year we got a surprise the day before thanksgiving, got a call from the nurse at the high school the gf's kid attends asking if someone would be home when school lets out.
I told her I'd be lurking around the place and asked what was up.
All she'll say is she's giving the kid a ride home with a big box but wont give me any more details, which naturally leaves me a bit confused.
So I head outside about the time I expect her there and they show up in the nurse's Subaru, at which point I have to wrestle a huge TV box full of food out of the back, and I mean this was real food, not the unwanted stuff most folks give to food drives, not one can of yams in the lot.
And, after thanking her and getting ready to lurch up the stairs with about half a ton of comestibles, she hands me an envelope that turns out to have a $900 check in it.
All this was from some sort of drawing the school had set up by the local business league where half the money goes to the school and the other to whomever wins.
Made for a pretty good thanksgiving all around.

I was going to get him some motorcycle overpants, to make sure that the important parts were protected. ;)

It makes me really happy to see the ones I care for enjoying their x-mas. So whenever I buy an x-mas present and I know it'll put a huge smile on the face of the people getting them, especially the kids, I am being selfish.
In a way I'm gifting myself because giving gifts is my x-mas gift.
Damn I'm so selfish. :(
