Classic & Vintage - Recommendation on rims for Zunow Build

Well, I got my Zunow frame in the mail a couple of days ago and now it's time to build the bike. I've got a nice late 80's Suntour Superbe Pro Hubset (36 hole) and looking for some rims. Any recommendations? I'd like to stay with a late 80's period rim. Any thoughts?

Clinchers or tubies?

For tubulars, I think I would go with Araya Aero just because the frame is already exotic looking and the gray anodized Arayas would be a nice contrast. Some brightly colored tires of course.

Clinchers. I like Araya here also, but cannot recommend a specific model simply because I don't know them.

Most definitely Clinchers as I plan on riding this alot and don't want to have to deal with glue and such. I also like Araya and used to have Araya Aero's at one time along with some really nice clinchers. The rest of the build is late 80's Suntour Superbe Pro. As for pictures of the frame, I think you've seen them. It's the frame that was just recently on EBAY. I may have paid more than I wanted to, but the frame looks so much better in real life than it did in those pics. Here's the link to the groupset that I'm putting on and the frame pics.

That's awesome a C&V'er got that frame, I was considering it and saw you had a bid (not to mention that it got to high for me), but I thought you were outbid. Can't wait to see pics, that Superbe Pro group will be great!

I wanted that frame but it got too expensive for me.

That paint job cries out for polished alloy rims. Don't put anodized grays or browns on it; that will detract from the spectacular but tasty frame treatment.

Don't write off the tubies so fast. You have to try them at least once, and that's a frame that deserves them. Mavic 330s or 270s would be great, otherwise Open Pros or Open Sports. I have the MA-3s on my DeBernardi track bike and it makes for hella stout urban riding.

Since no one else has mentioned them, the Mavic MA-2's are excellent. Pricey, but excellent. Look good, too.

It is the frame. I have some Vittoria Tires that are Green, Red, and Yellow to put on it. :eek:

Beautiful frame! I'd love to find one myself someday, but wow thats way too expensive for me. Maybe one will turn up locally some day.. garage sale? Yeah Fat Chance!

I just took a look at the eBay pics....ZOUNDS that thing is ugly!.....errr.....I mean..... NICE bike! :D

It isn't a "late 80's period rim", but I have used Torelli Master rims on several of my late 80's bikes. They were reasonably priced, available in silver or black and make a good riding road wheel that still has a vintage look. Don

Somehow I remember having a pair of those MA-40's and giving them to somebody. :D

Araya 1W. Not sure where to find 'em, but it's got a nice profile.

Another period Araya rim is the CTL-370. Was at a time the lightest 700C clincher rim.
I have a pair of Superbe Pro hubs built with them, back in the 80s. Never did use them. I think I may have a pic of them.

Congrats on the frame!

Since we are taking about vintage rims, I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the rims that are on this Cinelli that a BF member (I forget who) owns. Are these anodized rims? Will the braking surface get worn off and look streaked? I really like these rims and would love to track down a pair but if they get all crappy with lots of braking, there is no point. Thanks.

They're hard anodized, and they do wear down.
