Anyone have any suggestions? I'm not even sure if I'm going to need them. What happens if they are riden on, on pavement?

Does that answer your questions well enough?

studs on pavement just feel a bit slower than knobbies and slicks.
They have perfectly fine traction on dry and wet pavement.

Do the tires or studs degrade rapidly if on pavement?

I find the Nokians studs last years longer than the nashbar brands.

+1 to the Nokians,
their W106 model is a good balance between traction, performance and wear.
The set on my bike has over a 1000 km, studs still look good and work well.
There are other tires with more studs, but if your ride is a mix of pavement
with icy/hard pack spots the W106 is a more pragmatic choice. If your ride
is on mostly icy surfaces with lots of ruts etc, the other tires may be more
effective, not only as they have more studs but the studs are nearer the tire's
edge. What ever tire you use, riding on icy surfaces does take a little
practice and caution, it is easy to forget you are on ice and have the studs
and go too fast or corner too sharply.

carbide studs are durable, non-carbide studs not so much...
