Just bought a used, 2002 I think, cross check. It has sora shifters with xt and mavic M3 wheels. Would like to get a heavy duty wheel/tire set as I'm 250lbs right now and then upgrade the rest of the components. Any suggestion on all of the above would be greatly appreciated.

If those are 32 spoke wheels I wouldn't worry about them. XT hubs are plenty rugged and I don't know the M3 rim, Mavic rims are rarely brilliant but mostly don't suck. As for the rest, I'd take the opportunity to upgrade whenever anything breaks or bugs me.

For rims, Velocity Dyad or Deep-V rims with a 32 or 36 hole drilling should be bombproof. Dyads if you want to run wide tires (the rims are really wide), Deep-Vs if you want to run road tires (and the occasional wide CX tire).

I don't know what about the bike you need to improve. If you just need to do something start with the bar tape, and go to work on the points of contact. Those are rarely top of the line bits, fairly personal and tend to be heavy. Seat, post. bars, pedals like that. There's nothing about XT hubs to be upgraded and the Mavic rims are fine, sorry, no ideas for you there. There are surely other wheelsets that will be better for one purpose or another, but I don't know how you ride. After a certain point stuff isn't "better" it's just better for you.

Usually I'm pretty good at spending other people's money, but you've bought a very well spec'ed midline bike. Usually the point of a crosscheck is to not fuss about the nubbins. Oh, here's a serious upgrade you might consider: http://trophybikes.com/catalog.php?deptid=13&catid=-1&prodid=32

right, I'm looking for upgrade suggestions.And he gave the same upgrade suggestion I'm giving, namely, don't. Upgrade the engine, i.e., ride the f%#k out of it.

If anything, new bartape always makes her feel loved. Keep the chain well-oiled, derailleurs and brakes correctly adjusted, etc.

ride it until it breaks. and dollars to donuts the sora shifters are going to break first. once that happens you might as well go to 105. tiagra is fine, but when you are replacing something the price difference btwn tiagra and 105 is not so huge. OR the cheaper and arguably cooler option would be to go for bar ends or even downtubes (I ran downtubes on my xcheck for a while).
