I am unsure about how much pressure the roller should be putting on the rear tire, can you set the roller in too much after the skewer has been fixed to the trainer?

Cheers!

I set mine up to put just enough pressure to keep the wheel from slipping under maximum load. This works out to be about two or three cranks on the adjustment knob after the roller contacts the wheel. Your mileage will vary. There's a lot of leeway, so don't sweat it oo much. Just don't be a gorilla with the adjustment knob.

In addition to increasing roller pressure, letting some air out of your rear tire will improve traction.
