So who here snow ski's around the North East Ohio area? I live about 30 minutes from Boston Mills/Brandywine and I am looking forward to spending lot's of time there this winter. Will I see any other BF members on the slopes?

I'll be skiing here in WI, but XC. The closest ski hill to me was a land fill, so I know it doesn't take mountains to make good skiing.

Boyne mountain is 7 miles down the road from me (Northern Michigan). We have gotten close to a foot of snow this week and are forcasted for another in the next few days. Needless to say the slopes are open hear.

We will be going to Boston-Wine or Brandy-Mills bunny slopes a few times this winter.
Our grand-son now 3&1/2 needs more experience before going to his aunt's house in the hills near Denver. Also we need to take our 8 to 12 year old great nephews and nieces skiing. Normally we ski New York State once or twice then go to Denver or St. Lake.

I was on the fence for the CX race tomorrow thanks to this freakin' cold, but now I'm definitely out, as I could only get there on ice skates.

Good luck tomorrow. I don't think the Madison contingent will be showing up in huge numbers...:(

Is Boyne a worthwhile destination for downhill (from Wisconsin)? I ski in da UP quite a bit, and I've always wondered how Boyne compared to, say Indianhead....

The 6PM Cleveland TV news show had video of them making snow at the local areas. At 7PM we are getting traces of the first real snow of the season on the South shore of Lake Erie.

Isn't Boyne a long boat ride (in the winter) from Wisconsin?

Just to clarify, I meant the cold in my head that causing me to hoark up green oysters, not the cold outside...

I have never skied in th Up, no need to. Boyne has around 500 vertical so not bad for Michigan, and it has a ton of runs of all different levels. It is definitely the premier ski area for Michigan. They have lots of money and the hills reflect it. Our 160" of snow a year also help out.

I skied all day today and it was great they are up to 12-15 runs now and will be growing by 3-4 runs a days. we got around 8-10" inches last night and of course that sure helped things out.

My son will be learning to snowboard at Brandywine and Boston Mills. If the pavement's dry I'll ride my usual Akron/Peninsula - Riverview Route, watch him from my saddle and dream of days in the 80's, which we won't see now for 6 months. I don't downhill, but I do xc. The Oak Hill Trailhead area is great. What a resource the Valley is!

Wednesday morning with 1&1/2 to 2&1/2 inches of snow we went snowboarding (he calls it surfboarding) in the driveway and the front lawn, threw snowballs, shoved snow and built a small fort. Then went inside for lunch and to warm up. Later we got 3 inches of "Reverse Lake Effect" (that's when the areas that don't normally get much Lake Effect get the squall instead). Then we went to the only nearby park with a sledding hill. He snowboarded down serious stuff for a 3&1/2 year old. Next stop Boston Mills.

Skied Boston Mills today. Here is what I posted about the day over on Epicski.com....

Well after a 20+ year hiatus I am back and wow, what a lot of changes have taken place. My family and I have just recently moved to the North East Ohio area from Memphis Tennessee. My previous skiing was primarily in the mid Atlantic area of Maryland and Pennsylvania through the mid 80's. Today I took my son to Boston Mills for his first time on ski's. Back then I never ever would have thought I would ever say that . We arrived about 1 hour before his scheduled lesson so I took him to the bunny hill for a little practice. Keep in mind this was my first time EVER on shaped skis and my first time on any ski in a long time. I guess skiing is like riding a bike. I felt instantly comfortable on the ski's even though I was not doing much more than trying to teach the finer art of the snowplow. After several trips up and down the bunny hill it was time for my sons lesson and time for me to hit some bigger slopes. My first few runs were a bit rusty but after that everything seemed to come together. The new style of ski was not nearly as big of a change as I had feared. I did tap my tips together a few times but that was about it. The only wipe out I had today was not my fault. I was going down a groomed green when from my left I see a snowboarder coming right at me. I do my best to get out of the way but to no avail. He crossed over my tails and down I went. The young man apologized and no damage done. To be honest most all of the negative changes to skiing that I saw were all young snowboarder related. My son who remember is on his first ski trip has a hard time pushing himself up hill like all beginners do. Imagen his frustration when we get off the lift and there is no way to turn onto the slope with out going 30 feet farther up than the lift goes because of all the boarders sitting in the trail shooting the sh*t. Once we are on the slope it was not much better. There were young kids sitting everywhere with there boards......all over the slope. I don't get it. If you want to sit in the snow why not stay home and do that? More than a few times while in lift line these same kids felt the need to light up a cigarette while in line. Nothing worse than trying to enjoy the cool fresh air and getting a lung full of second hand smoke.
Even with those few nagging negatives we had a great time. My son gained lots of confidence and I think he has mastered the plow. He has joined his school ski club which starts in a couple of weeks and I think today was just what he needed to get him excited. Can't wait till next weekend

Why spend winter in a leg cast?
The Tow Path(runs across the ski area) is great during winter, plus you can park your bike at the Winking Lizard a get a snoot full for the ride back. One of my favorite December rides.
Might need a MB or 32+tires for this ride if the trail is damp.

I rode the towpath from Peninsula north to Brecksville and into the park then back to Peninsula a few weeks ago. We made a right up onto some singletrack trails off of the main path as well. There are some mighty steep climbs back in there.........

I have ridden most of the Metro Parks on the road. What a treasure our parks here are.

I go up to BM/BW a couple times a year usually. Never made it up there last year though. Hopefully there will be some good snow this year.

Maybe a BF get together at BM is in order. Anyone interested for later in the winter?

THat happened to me once on an XC trail. A kid with a snowboard took a liking to one of the downhills and I rolled up behind him FAST ... way too fast to say anything ... I rounded the corner and there he was. Right over the nose of his board I went and kept on going (too fast to turn around and take a look).

Never saw him on the trail again.
