Fifty Plus (50+) - First dings!

Had a great ride this morning. I've begun a 'social ride' group, to get some newcomers involved in the cycling group who don't want to hang with the very friendly but fiercely quick main group.

This morning Mrs Geezer and I put our bikes in the back of the pickup to explore some lanes on the north of the island. I gentled my new bike in there like a bag of eggs - I should have taken my old reliable, but this morning (6.00 am) I saw it had a slow puncture, and I was too sleepy and lazy to fix it.

About 2 hours on a beautiful morning, trundling close to the coastline, everyone loved it. About 50 km, and breakfast and chat afterwards. Then, to get back, a couple of people asked if they could catch a lift with their bikes in the truck. What can you say?

So - 4 bikes instead of 2. Result - dingy scratches. Nothing of any significance - But I know it's there, like if you see a coffee mug ring on a new grand piano!

Anyone else so fussy about keeping a new thing new?

The first scratch is always the hardest to take. But at least now you have that behind you.

Hate first scratches. After that I can relax and enjoy the bike....or car....or whatever.

I bought 3 bikes in the last 14 months, all used. Otherwise dings would really annoy me. The last 4 vehicles I've purchased were used too. I still own the last car I purchased brand new, a 1997 Corolla, and it has several dings all over it - which still annoy me because I remember when it was so shiny & new.

Hate first scratches. After that I can relax and enjoy the bike....or car....or whatever.

Having been mountain biking- It doesn't take long before the first scratch comes on my bikes. The giant took a year but that was only on the decals. Boreas is hard adonised and that is going to take some damage to mark it but I dare say that will happen.

Glad to see the "New" bike was christened in a friendly way and no real damage done.

I built up a new FS 2 yrs ago and put like $3000 into it, the first couple scratches were hard, but I just looked at it and realized how much fun it was to ride this fantastic machine. Now the scratches and dings don't even matter, not if I wanna actually use this bike for what it was intended. Only thing- this is a XC bike and I don't huck it or abuse the hell out it.

First scratch? You put them on during the fitting and delivery process. None of this mucking about and waiting. Just like building a bike - it'll never ride well without a blood stain installed during the build.

I made a cedar strip kayak that took months to cmplete and it had a beautiful clear finish. I babied it until the first scratch and then I relaxed and enjoyed it.

Love strip built boats.

The first ding on the Trek was when my daughter pushed it over in the house - scrapes on the brifter.
The Jamis was a NOS frame and came with chips already installed. She got the scratched and beaten groupset off the Trek and so I haven't had to worry about 'new bike' syndrome :D

Hmm, getting your fingers greasy when fiddling with the chain and them grabbing the frame :D Gee, I could almost feel sorry for white bike owners ... almost ;)
