Classic & Vintage - Old Schwinn fell into my lap.

I was out of town, today, & saw a bike in front of Habitat for Humanity store. I stopped to get a closer look at it, & it was a Schwinn World Tourist 5 spd. Ser # GO783. Copper color, all original, including the seat. It will need a little trueing of the wheels & cleaning. It will look almost like new after this. I rarely deal with older bikes, unless they are old balloon tire bikes, but liked this one,,, so out went my $$. I have to look up the manufacture date on it.

Rest assured that at least your $$ is going to a worthwhile charity that helps alot of people.

Scooper, I take it that the catalogue does not show the correct copper coloured saddle which Esteban32696 has?

Margaret, Esteban32696's bike is Chestnut with a black saddle just like the catalog illustration. I'm not sure where the "copper color" came from..

Don't forget to post pictures! I believe this is an early to mid 80's model and if I remember correctly the "G" designates that Giant in Taiwan built this for Schwinn.

I picked up a ladies World Tourist on CL a couple of weeks back. It is identical to the catalog, other than a smaller saddle. Haven't messed with it yet, not quite sure what to make of the FFS.

Checking out the sale literature, FFS looks like a great idea on paper.

Maybe, but Shimano learned from this mistake. Moving the freewheel was a bad idea, but implementing index type shifting wasn't. Shimano realized that the american rider wanted index shifting, learned from their mistake and came out with SIS in 1985. They caught Suntour, Campagnolo and the French by surprize, then buried them.
I'm not defending Positron one bit, but it was that mistake that led to the huge success of SIS. Shimano, to their credit, studied the failure and learned from it. Sadly, Suntour was caught off guard and never recovered and eventually was sold off.

It does have the FF System on this bike. It is Chestnut , [ sorry I said Copper ] . I don't know why the pix didn't show up in post #7. But the link I posted in #8 shows it,,,as does Scoopers post #10.THANKS for posting that. Also, in the link you see the Blue ladies Columbia bike.
I usually only have buy & trade mountain/hybrid type bikes but couldn't pass on either one of these . Both were priced to sell. I will be selling both of them too, once I do a little work to them. If anyone is interested, I am located in N. Florida.

The Schwinn, 5 spd , after minor repairs & cleaning will be for sale. It is 100% original & at least 80% like new.
The Columbia 3 spd, 1969 S/A hub is in good overall condition, but would need restoring , cosmetically, to make it sharp.
What would be a fair price to sell for each ??? Thanks !!

Probably your best bet to sell them is craigslist. If you're in a college town (Jacksonville, Gainesville, Madison, Tallahassee, Pensacola) they'd make great transportation for students.

As far as pricing is concerned, neither is particularly collectible and the Schwinn's frame is common carbon steel (I suspect the Columbia frame is the same) making it pretty heavy by today's standards. I'd guess they'll sell for $50 to $100 each.

Thanks for all the posts. I plan on taking the Schwinn on her maiden voyage, today. I do wonder, if the unique drive-system may make it more collectible over the years .
