Mountain Biking - Not a debate; SRAM vs. Shimano in court

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just some info for anyone who has not seen this. Seems Shimano has put a stop to SRAM selling some of their new product in Germany.

Lets try and refrain from a debate of which is better. Self control, with out it you will always crash.

You must've had two cups of coffee this morning!

Nice headsets btw!

ha, ha, I just reread that. Sounds like a corny pick up line, or a rude comment to women cyclists. "Didja see the headsets on her?"

Shimano is sueing SRAM for breach of PAtent.
Sram copied Shimano's ramp profile and the positioning thereof for their powerglide cassettes.

PAtent...thats bollocks...as the spline system...every kind of this type of tech should be free.

From my cursory inspection SRAM's set up isn't exactly the same as Shimano's (and to my mind the cassettes work slightly better for longer) but the principal is the same, and was close enough for a German court. Fortunately you can still buy SRAM cassettes in the UK. I think SRAM have the edge on chains and cassettes and prefer their shiftersand brakes but happily use Shimano cranksets, hubs and derailleurs.

My biggest problem with this monopolistic style aggression is that Shimano cannot seem to keep up with the demand as it is.

Spend more time producing products and less time attacking the competition.

I like both companies and have no complaints aboiut either. It is also largely due to Shimano that some of the stuff we have available is so damn good and affordable. I'd hate to be stuck with just Campy and Mavic. I'd be broke.
