Commuting - Do you know of any politicians who bike to work?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I don't think he bikes to work, but DC Mayor Adrian Fenty is a triathlete and has been in competition even while in office.

I'm actually more proud of this guy than Mayor Williams, our previous mayor whose main claim to infamy is the courting of the Expos to become the new Washington Nationals and building the white elephant of a new ballpark instead of rehabbing RFK.

A (former?) city council person of the Green Party, in Minneapolis Minnesota USA used to ride a bike to work.

Yes, several, although the only name that comes to mind right now is a city councillor, Clive Doucet (http://ottawa.ca/city_hall/mayor_council/councillors/c_doucet_en.html). I don't know if he bikes in the winter, though.

Up here Federal NDP leader Jack Layton cycles to Parliament Hill. I am not sure whether he does it on a continual basis or did it as a publicity thing.

Up here Federal NDP leader Jack Layton cycles to Parliament Hill. I am not sure whether he does it on a continual basis or did it as a publicity thing.

Doh! How could I forget Layton?!? I think he's a "most of the time" cyclist, from what he said in interviews.

Boris Johnson, Conservative candidate for Mayor of London bikes to work (he is currently an M.P.) Since his bike was nicked he has added the introduction of Sharia Law for bike theft to his list of policies!

In Portland, we've got a few local politicians who bike commute.

City Commissioner Sam Adams - although I get the impression he's not organized enough to do it all the time and make it to meetings and such away from City Hall.
City Commissioner Randy Leonard - good weather only, and he drives through the first part of his commute where motorists are scary.
The City Attorney is a regular bike commuter, although I don't know his name of the top of my head.
Mayor Tom Potter pulls out his recumbent for publicity purposes.
Former Mayor Bud Clark did ride his bike to work regularly when in office.
Metro (regional government) Councillor Rex Burkholder. I don't think he's the only one on the Metro Council, but I'm not sure who the other is.
My House representative, Earl Blumenauer. He was off his bike for a while from a broken leg, though.
Rep. Peter DeFazio, who represents the part of Oregon that includes Eugene.
I think Senator Ron Wyden has been known to occasionally bike commute.
I believe Blumenauer and DeFazio drag the rest of the Oregon Congressional delegation out on bikes periodically.

Wasn't Earl Blumenauer quoted as having said on the floor of the House, "Let's have a moment of silence for all those Americans stuck in traffic on their way to the gym to ride a stationary bicycle?"

So, why is this guy not running for President? :)

Says Jack Layton hasn't owned a car for years. Maybe we should get him to sign up for the Living Car Free forum.

I think Toronto City Councillors Glenn De Baeremaeker and Adrian Heaps both cycle to and from City Hall every day. And both of them are out in Scarborough, some 15-25kms away.

He did say that. If he were President, I doubt they'd let him ride as much. It's easier for the Secret Service to secure trails than roads, after all.

NYC Dept. of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and Deputy Mayor Dan Doctoroff are both bike commuters, as I believe are a number of DOT employees (Sadik-Khan "stole" several of her staff from bike advocacy group Transportation Alternatives). US Senator Chuck Schumer is a recreational rider.

In Latvia a few MPs cycle to work in the summertime. Strangely enough one of the bigwigs in the Green Party here was complaining about people cycling near the Parliament.

+1

David Cameron, the Lib Dem guy opposing Donald Trump's scottish hotel scheme, quite a few other conservative MPs.

I can't think of any Labour MPs that actually ride - could you imagine 2jags (Prezza) on a bicycle when he was an MP?

As some one pointed out on this forum a ways back (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=337952), Paul Clement, Solicitor General of the United States (and former acting Attorney General) apparently commutes on a Fuji road bike from Alexandria.

Gov.Tim Kane of Virginia, is a big cycling fan. I'm not sure of his commute,( probably very short, I think the Gov. mansion and Capital share the same grounds ) but he takes part in Bike Virginia with his family.

During our annual 40 mile advocacy ride, our lovely mayor Franklin pulls out a mountain bike and rides with us for about 100 yards or 100 photos, whichever comes first.

I think that's the only ride she gets in all year.

Here is who I know about:

Delegate Jon Cardin (D) Baltimore County has been known to bike to work (some 35-40 miles  in ~ 2 hours)

Senator Brian Frosh (D) Montgomery County

Douglas McCoach, Director of Planning Baltimore City (We both use the same route downtown so we run into each other from time to time which is cool.)

Honorable mention:

Mayor Sheila Dixon - Baltimore City (Started bike rides for her and her staff from City Hall (this is riding in traffic most of the time))
(Edit: I should note that during her Bike to Work week kick off press event she was supposed to just ride from City Hall down to the Inner Harbor and then back. But she said I’m just getting warmed up so off she went down to Fort McHenry. It was a panic watching everyone scrambling trying to keep up with her. She definitely enjoys cycling.)

Al Foxx Director of Transportation (Has lost 30lbs so far through diet and exercise. First bike ride he went for the full 10 miles even though he was dead last and had a short cut option. He has done a hilly 20 miles with the group and is getting notably faster.)

TO my memory in Toronto I have heard of Mayor (current) David Miller riding a bike but I suspect it as a publicity thing only during bike week. NDP leader Jack Layton and I think NDP Olivia Chow (Laytons wife) rides as well. That is all I remember.

I don't think Jack and Olivia are winter riders. Also makes me wonder how the security team moves with them if they're riding on bikes often. A bike platoon?

I have seen my State Senator, Marci Francisco, on a bicycle MANY times. I don't know if she uses it to commute to work, but it's got a big basket on it. I'd bet that at the very least, she uses it as a grocery-getter!

in 2006, the last time the TX congress met there were a couple of representative that rode on the ride to work day, Rodney Ellis of Houston did it, and I think one of them rides regularly from his home in Austin to the capital a few times a week. I do not remember the others name right offhand.

Philadelphia Mayor John Street is a cyclist. Street's successor, Mayor-elect Michael Nutter, is a cyclist, as is his wife. Boston's Mayor just got a Trek Lime.

The blogger at Travels with a Tin Donkey is a Canadian diplomat, according to rumors I've come across. He is a commuter, according to his blog.

For the last few "Bike to Work Days" the chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, Sen. Tom Torlakson, has made a big show of riding from his house in Antioch to the Capitol. It's a 68 mile ride, which is an impressive feat for most folks, but it sort of misses the point of BTWD, which is to demonstrate how easy, reliable, and well, normal, it is to ride your bike to work.
