Picked up a pair of PI Amfib tights at the LBS. They do not come with chamois - when I asked the salesman about this he said that people wear their usual bike shorts under the tights. Trying them on that way it seems pretty tight and stiff around the hips/groin area. I wonder if these tights are really meant to be worn with shorts under, or is there a better way to get a chamois in there? PI website gives minimal info and is no help with this. Thanks.

He's right.

Tights are meant to be worn with your cycling shorts underneath. Sounds like the pair of tights you tried are too small for you ... they've got to have some flex around the hips and knees.

i've been really happy with my amfib tights. depending on what and where i'm going, i'll either wear cycling shorts or underwear (they make good long-johns under pants too). just try to keep them away from velcro...

I have a pair of PI tights with a pad, blue pad, 2005 model I think.

I doubt that tights were invented for the purpose of wearing cycling shorts underneath. However, it is common and effective practice to wear them underneath as a tight w/o chamois can be used for a wide variety of activities besides cycling. Wearing them underneath probably wouldn't be too helpful.

when riding in the teens and 20's, bike shorts, with leg warmers under tights is customary.

If you have tights that are not bibtights, then you will probably require suspenders to keep the tights up, regardless of how they fit. At least that has been my experience.

??????

My tights stay up just fine ... perhaps yours are either too small or too big.

Tights over the shorts is correct. But I'm not accustomed to tights over leg warmers, but that's probably because I live in San Diego.

well i've worn leg warmers *over* my tights... does that count?
