Fifty Plus (50+) - No Birthday ride for Tom

No plans for an age ride, but wanted to sneak in a 15-20 miler today. But those hopes were dashed when a snowstorm rolled into the area at 9 AM. We have about 4" now, supposed on the road to 6+ by sometime tonight. Right now it is 24 with a 10-15 mph wind, and the snow has changed over to a form of sleet, really small frozen balls of ice that bounce off of you and make the roads very slick. Wind chill factor is 10 degrees.

Supposed to warm up to 37 by Sunday afternoon, with the snow continuing until mid-day. Then cool off with highs in the mid-20's and lows in the mid-teens for a few days.

May be a while until I ride again.

I did drive down to the New Glarus trailhead, did a little Christmas shopping, and had a delightful orange/cranberry scone.

Happy birthday TB. Don't worry about riding in all that bad weather, the rules state that you can owe the miles and simply repay next year by adding those miles to next year's birthday ride miles. See, no problem at all. :p

If it wasn't a bit too far and the weather maybe a bit iffy, I'd come over and ride it with you.

We got in our Saturday morning ride today (Dec 1), about half in some sun, 1/4 in sprinkles and 1/4 in rain/almost snow.

I don't envy you the weather in the frozen north. I was in Madison for several days last February, and it was miserable. However, the area looked as if it could be nice during civilized weather. We'll cut you some slack on the birthday miles.

Our daughter's back from So. Cal. for a few months and we wemt out and
cut down our Holiday Tree today. I thought I was cold until I saw her. :eek:

For those of us born when the weather is not at its best- Just getting out for a ride is good enough so have to admit that TB failed miserably. I dare say he made up for it on the other stakes though with extra pie consumed and probably a hang-over tomorrow.

Now to ride your age at any time from November to March can be a bit of a problem so it is accepted that this ride can take full credits at any time of the year- To take advantage of the Warmer weather and better scenery that is available.

But at least I'm man enough to admit it, unlike certain (unnamed) others.

As to riding, remember I only ride trails, not roads. No one plows the trails. I suppose I could have tried forcing my bike through 4" of snow & ice down the trail, but I doubt I would have made it very far.

Hate to say it but fresh snow or rutted Ice is better than plowed snow. All you will get is a layer of Ice that gives you a false sense of Security.-Looks clean but you don't know where the Black ice is.

Now as to doing in on a tyre with pressure more than 40psi or a width less than 2.1???????

Our trails are multi-use. No horses or ATVs allowed, but when they are snow-covered, snowmobiles are allowed. So there will be no snowplowing on them. I guess I could try to ride on the packed down snow from the snowmobiles but I suspect that would be rather treacherous.

Best of Birthdays to you. Just remember the bike goes no where without you pedaling it. Take it easy and it will be there waiting for you. Bikes are loyal. They know who loves them!
