"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Vaughters as SI "sportsman of the year"???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Awesome.
He won't get it, but nice to see SI noticing the positive side to cyclings bad rap.
Now, if they can get around to outing the big-3 in the US (NFL, NBA, MLB)

The most powerful moments of the night came courtesy of Vaughters, who delivered a forceful, emotional declaration of Slipstream's mission. "We will succeed," he vowed, "not by out-horse-powering" our foes, "not by crushing the competition with 6.7 watts per/kilogram at threshold" -- that's a really big number, apparently. They would succeed as they have in the past, he promised, with "panache"; by "attacking when no one else would"; through luck, grit, and by training harder .. and suffering more than anyone else."
Well, duh.

Ha! Talk about speaking and writing for your audience.

If it is, good luck to Slipstream, they'll need it.

Where's DocRay's post on this thread? Nothing to say when it's a positive, constructive development for our sport? No opportunity to trash the sport, no DR. How utterly predictable. Hey DR, that's an AMERICAN at the cutting edge of cleaning up not only bicycle racing, but potentially showing the path forward for all pro sports.
You're welcome.
Where's DocRay's post on this thread?
Ehm, I think he's been banned.

Incorrect. Pcad is belligerent enough to fight anyone, anytime, dead or alive, present or absent. I've been pissing up ropes since I was a Pcadette.
Come on, doesn't anyone want to know what my #1 fantasy is?

Good grief! For a moment I saw a possible English connection because of Millar.

Someone I trust a lot with personal judgments said JV is the most obnoxious person he's ever met.
If that's what it takes to be a "really clean" team, then fine. Dictatorships are more effective in attaining narrow goals than democracies. It would be nice if JV was a really nice guy and still got things done though.

I don't care if JV eats live kittens for breakfast, if his work actually helps to clean up cycling, then I'll be his new BFF.

+1, so long as they are argyle kittens...and I can keep visible support limited to my socks (and the cap).

The team planes of the Rangers, Devils and Islanders have a midair collision over Yankees Stadium and the flaming wrecking plunges to the diamond during Yankees batting practice. All my NY sports misery eliminated in one spectacular disaster. I hate the Yankees, but I hate pro hockey more.
On that note, Happy Holidays.

Yeah...I know someone who has a kid that raced for his TIAA/CREF 5280 team. They think the world of him. I've talked to him twice. He's a bit sarcastic, but most of the guys I raced with were, also, so it's nothing new.
Goes with the territory.
Corbett must not have liked him. Oh, well. He can watch JV over in Europe with his pro team next year.

Quit yer whinning! Have you seen the Capitals play lately? Oy Vey, they suck!
Oh and JV for Sportsman of the Year. You gotta be kidding? I'm sure he's all that and a bag of chips, but the only cyclists to be SOTY were both multi Tour winners. American multi Tour winners.

Four teams in NY alone, and 5 in Canada. It's a shame. Maybe the predators will be there soon, but hopefully not in Hamilton. Hockey doesn't belong below the Mason-Dixon line.

Hockey doesn't belong below the Mason-Dixon line. And the Caps are proving your right. That Stanley Cup they won seems like a million years ago. :(

Here's hoping they end up in the 'Peg. I'm still of the opinion that Saskatoon could support a team. I'd say Regina first but S'toon would probably whine with us having both the Riders and a pro hockey team. Oh ya and for those who didn't know...

Amen. Adding to the annoyance is the preponderance of garbage hockey played there.

You need to find owners with money. Same as the CFL. Eight teams in the league's not really that great. Find owners that have money to invest. Like someone putting a team back in Ottawa.
That's why there is a team in Columbus, Ohio. Money.

The Caps? What Stanley Cup? Other than a trip to the finals in 1998 losing to Detroit, what Stanley Cup are you referring to?

I don't recall them winning one, either.
Thirty-five years and counting for the Bruins. Good thing we have a couple of halfway decent teams in other sports to root for around here.

Damn old age and delusions. I stand corrected on the cup thing. They still suck.
Some interesting comments from Vaughters:
"I'm doing my best. I mean you can shoot me down and call me a hypocrite - and I do not have a perfect argument to say you're wrong. However...I'm doing everything in my power to change things. I was asked to take this team on, and I agreed, with the caveat that I would get to do it my way, with testing and a culture that doping was not a part of, and that the pressure to win on demand, from sponsors, would be nil. Doug Ellis asked me to do this project, not vice versa. This isn't some creation that I've formed to deceive people so I can make money."
