Is this true, it cost this much to ship a bike, or is this person simply adding value to the bike to ensure they get a good price?

It will go double oversize if shipped UPS gound. From AZ to CA should cost ~$15 (Check the 70 pound rate at UPS.com for exact figure). Another $15 for a bike shop to pack it

Shipping is 100.00 local only??

Seems like the guy is just looking to get 100 bux for the thing. Guess he's got it up to 101.25 now.

So, 30 bucks roughly, add in 20 bucks for the trouble of going to the shop, and UPS places.. that'd be 50.

Hmm... Well, I guess I shouldn't comment. If I'm not willing to pay the price, I should shut up. It's not like I don't have a choice. If I wanted it that bad, I guess I'd pay.

Of course, I could DRIVE to AZ, or rather, fly there and ride back!!!!

Local shipping so I guess he wants to recoupe some of the outrageous gas prices he has been paying and deliver that great bike to you personally. Plus he is also charging 8.1% tax wonder if the shipping is also taxed? Anyway what a waste!

No, if you take an oversize box to UPS or the USPS it will cost $100 to ship it. It isn't just weight but the dimensions of the box. Just under that size and it will only cost in the $25 range to ship.
He isn't ripping anyone off, the post office is. He can get a slightly smaller box to get the reasonable charge.

it cost me 50 to send from alabama to washington a bike (UPS), and i had to take both wheels off and the handle bars to get in box small enought not to be charged for oversized shipping
for bikes it all comes down to the size of the box (for most bikes)

95% of bike boxes will ship at the "double oversize" rate, that is, 70lbs or real weight, whatever is higher. UPS counter cost is $24.65, however, most independnt shipping centers can ship for much less then that. Just dont goto a national chain, you may pay double!

Guess the guy's trying to cover Ebay & Paypal charges.......bad move...

I just shipped a road bike yesterday in a Cannondale box, and on the outside of the box it clearly states that the box is NOT oversized based on UPS requirements. It cost me $54 to ship the bike to Texas from Pennsylvania.

360 miles, time two (round trip), divided by 15 (high estimate on MPG), times 2.05 (regular gass lately) = 98 dollars and 44 cents. So, if I drove, I'd save a buck or so.

If I drove my wife's car.. 360 miles, time two divided by 32, times 2.25 (durn special gass) 50.625.. So that'd save me. Hmm.

"Honey, can I borrow the car to drive 700 plus miles to pick up yet another bike?"

"No honey, I haven't finished the MTB, and I still have a problem with the hub on the fixed gear."

"No honey, I haven't finished the trim on the house yet.."

" 'bout 50 dollars, not including gass"

'I got the price from the local bike shop, I know it is
high but that is what they charge, of corse I can get

Well, looks like he's having the bike shop do the packing and shipping. This fact should have been disclosed in his description, at least. Anyway, I'm not sure if I like this idea or not.

About $40 to $65 from the center of the USA to the coasts.

This guy doesn't know how to box a bike. He doesn't know how to sell it, either. In fact, it really isn't a very good bike to begin with....

I paid about $45 to have a mtn bike shipped from WA to FL, that's about as far accross as you can get. It was a heavy mtn bike too! Oh, I only use FedEx Ground. Usually Cheaper, seldom a problem with damage, and no argument if there is.

I won an ebay bid and the seller wanted $200 to ship from Washington to FL. It was an obvious case of the seller trying to make some money.

Precisely why I always make sure I have a quoted shipping charge before I bid on anything on ebay...

This one looks like one of those bikes where the shipping charge will seriously hurt his final price - don't most of us look at total cost when buying online?? The dude should've shopped around if he thought the price was high at the bike shop.

You gotta also wonder why a private party is charging sales tax?

I just ran a 70# pkg Seattle to NYC and it was $38.50 if insured it is $0.12 per every $100 value declared first hundred is free (i.e $101= $0.12 $201=$0.24) of course my experience with UPS is never send anything of value without insuring it.

My experience with UPS is never send anything of value, unless you WANT to collect the insurance!

Learned that one the hard way! Couple of time!

my Cannondale was shipped by a bike shop packed perfectly (all parts wrapped, whole frame was wrapped etc...)for $50 TOTAL any more is a RIPOFF... stay away from crooks like this clown...
