I'm still plugging away on the Centurion I posted about months ago.

Though I'm keeping the downtube shifters, I'm going to replace the brakes and the brake levers (bad shape!).

The road bikes I've owned have had brifters...but I've heard things about Shimano brake-only levers being on the skinny side and a bit uncomfortable. True?

If so, can someone recommend a good comfortable brake lever for this re-build? Thanks!

The Cane Creek and Tektro levers are copies of Campy Ergo levers and are wide as all get out.

Tektro R200A
Cane Creek SCR-5

Both great!

Plus the CC's come with gum hoods. Do they still make the Gum/black lever combo or jut silver?

I'll disagree about whatever rumors you've heard about Shimano. My workhorse trainer is circa-'87 Shimano 105, and I love those enough that I changed out the non-aero Weinmanns on my Raleigh Compeition GS to Shimano 600 aero levers from the same era.

Another vote for the Tektros. They are standard on my 2007 Madison and are the most comfortable new levers I own. Roger

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I'll look into those for the rebuild.

Cheers!

I've got Shimano 600 brake levers and they feel pretty comfortable to me. Very high quality of finish.

Another vote for 'nothing wrong with the Shimano levers'. Of the lot I like the bargain-basement Exage Sport levers with the quick release button. Have also used the even cheaper SLR levers and the higher zoot 105s.
