Im building some wheels up im using paul hubs and dt spokes what are the best, toughest rims to use. Ive heard some good things about mavic open pros and salsa delgados but i am just wondering if you all fine people know of something better...

open pros are nice and tend to be very straight and true. plus they have double eyelets, as opposed to the delgado's single eyelets, so you can't lose spoke nipples in the rim cavity (it's a real pain in the @ss).

Open Pros are considered by many to be the standard for bomb-proofness. They're not infallible; no wheel is, but compared to a lot of other offerings out there they are pretty tough. Esp. 36H models.

Mavic A719's are very strong. You might want to check them out.

open pros have the best mix of durability and light weight that i've found. if weight is not a concern, velocity deep v's are pretty much indestructible.

Yeah, exactly. If you're looking for practically indestructible wheels and weight isn't a concern, you should definitely go with the Deep V.

I use an Open Pro on the rear, but thats beause I could not find a Campagnolo Omega Omnicron rim for the front...that Omega IS damnnear bomb proof.
Also, consider using a nice wide rim, and double eyelets are always good.

A 36 spoke, box rim will be pretty strong. A 36 spoke deep V type rim will be even stronger, but heavier. Of course, the real determinant of strength is the wheel build itself. You might try a slightly wider rim. Open Pros are pretty narrow. DRC make a 17mm wide rim, which is just right for 32mm tyres, or you could consider the Mavic A319 previously mentioned. I used these until I broke my front hub.. now I am using Vuelta Typhoon rims.

I just picked up some Open Pros and couldn't be happier. They are extremely solid. I rode the same ride that blew my last pair of wheels up (literally pulled the spokes through the rim...yeah, I weigh 200+) and the Open Pros blasted through without flinching. Straight and strong.

But definitely the build itself matters. If they aren't built right they'll fall out of true no matter how bomber.
