Mountain Bike Racing - geared vs single speed races

I don't mean a geared bike vs a ss bike I mean how many races are there compared to each other. I assume there are less ss races but I didn't know what the estimated ratio is .

my question is because im looking at buying my first real mtb . so far I've narrowed it down to a hardtail 29er but im now deciding on going geared or ss.

I really like the idea of ss but I do want to get into some kind of racing but if theres like 90% more geared races than ss, then I might go geared with my first mtb.

SS is usually a classification within a race. In my area, SS is an open class, then there are beginner classes by age, sport by age, expert by age, and elite open class. So, your answer, for my area, is every mountain bike race includes a SS race.

To expand on what Bike Lover is saying, in our area (Michigan) you can ride a singlespeed in any class. The vast majority of racers in the other classes will be on geared bikes though.

Thanks for the clearification, but I was trying to convey the fact that, in the CPS series at least, there is a seperate classification for SS. It is also true that you will not be disqualified for riding an SS in any class.
