I have just purchased a pair of superbe pro road cranks, NOS from the 80's. As usual I didn't read properly that they are 138 bcd and am having trouble finding chainrings. Are they common or were they a one off. Also does anyone have some for sale.

Are you sure it is 138 BCD, what is the centre-to-centre measurement between adjacent chainring bolts?

I have never heard of a 138mm BCD. Sugino used an old Campagnolo standard, 144mm, for almost two decades, before switching to 130mm, which is the modern Shimano road standard.

Sheldon Brown presents a comprehensive list, but here are some relevant 5-bolt BCDs:
151mm: pre-1967 Campagnolo road standard, minimum 44 teeth
144mm: 1967-early 1980s (help with date?) Campag., copied by Sugino, Ofmega, etc., 41T
135mm: current Campagnolo, 39T
130mm: current Shimano, 38T
128mm: 1970s Nervar, 38T
122mm: 1970s Stronglight, 38T

They were advertised as 138 ,and as I havn't recieved them yet I can't be positive. I sent an email to the guy I won them off and he didn't seem to interested so I have been doing a bit of research before they arrive.I'm hoping it was a typo error. The bike I am going to put them on is a Custom made Kenevans frame made in 1983

Thanks guys, they just turned up and are 144 ,so hopefully the size advertised put bidders off and i got a bargain. This is the bike i am restoring to its former glory , getting rid of the campag bits and replacing with superbe pro everything including tubular wheels currently being laced, new bars ready to put on and turbo seat.
