Checking hour by hour forecast last night, it predicted some rain by noon. So I figured great, I'll get up early, get a short 1 hour spin in, shower up, then come into work. Not!!! So it's 5 am, and those strange noises I heard while sleeping were raindrops. Oh well. At least I got a good 30 miles in yesterday.
I was wondering why last night, on the ride home, I felt warmer than usual.

I woke up around 5 am from similar noises as well. I panicked and thought I left the hose on in the backyard all night. But no, its the rain. The good thing is now I have time to get my rain bike ready for the commute. :D

I'm just a wimp when it comes to rain. If it happens to rain, due to being on a ride already, or an organized ride, I will ride through it. But if it rains before even starting, it's time to go back to bed.

I don't know when you were checking but when I check(weather.com,around midnight) it was suppose to rain real early like at 3-4am. I left the house at 5:30 during a break, half way to work, the rain picked up.

This morning: woke up at 5 am, threw on the booties and rear fender, rode to work. It's just water. :D

It's funny. I'll commute in the rain, and actually like it when it isn't really cold, but I can't see getting on the bike to ride in teh rain for fun. Weird.
This morning I am reminded how much rain makes all the dirt and sand fly up and stick to my bike. I'm not a crazy neat freak, but one ride and my bike is really ugly.

Same way here. I was excited this morning as I got my rain commuter ready for work. The wife asked why I don't just drive in to work. I gave here "the look" and said "Its only rain". But when it come to riding for fun or fitness in the rain its a no go. I'd rather stay home that weekend if its raining. Maybe because I don't feel like having fun on my 30 pound commuter with fenders compared to my other bike.

Watch the radar animation and do the ride when there's a break in precip.

You'll still need fenders and such but you won't be soaked like you would in a downpour.
I did a 6am ride yesterday over to Page Mill/Moody to test out the new show covers, face mask and lobster mits. Descending Moody road and that general valley area is always noticeably colder than the rest of the ride and the extra gear did help. The sound of rain waking me up canceled my hopes of a ride this morning.
I have not watched the news in the morning for a few years but one thing that always bugged me was how Joel what's his name would flip his pen or whatever in the air and catch it.

I commute in the rain, and I can assure you it isn't just water. It's sand, mud and oil, gunk on your glasses and a skunk tail of grime up your back.
Still worth it, though....

I do training rides in the rain. If you dress accordingly its no big deal. Usually after a good rain the roads are actually cleaner, atleast thats how it works around here.

Full fenders can easily remedy that problem.;)

Yup. Also, FYI P-clips (metal with rubber insert) can allow for full fenders to be installed on eyelet-less road frames.

Left the house at 7, should have thrown on the booties and rear fender. Instead was wringing water out of my socks an hour later! But you're right, it was just water. :)

You really do need full fenders to really enjoy commuting in the rain. At least the wetness would be from clean rain instead of dirty road spray.

+1 on the full fenders. It rained pretty bad on my way to work today and I was soaked with rain. But I did not get any of the road grime on me and my drivetrain remained pretty clean.

How did you offend them? Were you spinning like a top?

I like the POP (probability of precipitation) graph on Accuweather. For wind and temperature, I trust the National Weather Service more, but they don't update their rain forecast as often as Accuweather. Accuweather's temperature forecasts can be very inaccurate for rural areas, like the San Mateo County coast.
I didn't check this morning because I knew I'd get wet no matter what. No chance I'll let some water stop a bike ride on a day off though. Got in 35 miles and was dumped on the entire climb up Moody and Page Mill. And then spent 45 minutes cleaning up the bike once I got back.
