Foo - Gas up, RAM down.

I just bought 2 more GBs of RAM for my computer. The price when I built my computer last year: $280... now: $68... Plus there's a $30 rebate so it'll be $38.

I don't follow this kind of stuff, but dam, thats a big drop.

I know. I have more RAM than my OS can use. I have 8GBs. When I go to 64 bit, watch out.

Our lab's new printer was spec'd for "only" 384 MB RAM (upgradeable to 1 GB). That's more than my family's first five computers (1 MB, 4 MB, 16 MB, 288 MB, 12 MB--a used laptop just for writing) combined! Mind you, when I was in college, 288 MB of RAM was a very generous amount. I started out with 32 MB and eventually upgraded to 288 MB (adding 128 MB on two occasions). On my laptop, to save battery power, I would load a minimal operating system and MS Word into RAM and run it off a RAM drive, having the hard drive spin up only when opening or saving a document. You could throw our first two laser printers (3 MB each) into the mix, too, and it still doesn't add up to that much. Heck... throw in the 20 MB hard drive from that first computer, too. That adds up to, oh, 347 MB.

I like having lots of RAAM. :D My desktop and laptop both have 2 GB, which is plenty for what I do.

Its Corsair XMS2 memory, from NEW EGG (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820145590). I'm sure there's cheaper out there, but its what I already have in there and it makes me feel all good inside when I have all the same memory, and at this price I'm not complaining.


I remember my second computer, with Windows 95. 32mb of Ram, added 16mb for a grand total 46. Hard drive was less than 100mb, which was small even then.

I just bought 2 gigs of Patriot RAM (two 1GB sticks) for $64 including tax from Fry's a couple days ago. I'm not sure of the brand, but the machine worked and passed a RAM test... so far, so good.

With RAM prices so inexpensive, I'm considering just maxing every computer that I have in the RAM department. Especially with Vista.

Now if automobiles could run on RAM...

Yea I just bought 2 GB this week for $45 shipped from komusa.com. I think we're coming to an age of technology where what we need or are complacent with are less than what is able to be produced. Thus, it is in my opinion that the cost of living and overall welfare should begin to drop and rise, respectively.

About 1975 I helped our IBM CE install 1/2 meg (yes 512k) on our 370-158. The cards took up a whole cart. The cost, a cool million!!

That is true up to a point. We used to strive for efficiency, sometimes going as far as changing programs to make them more memory and less processor intensive or vice versa depending what we had available. Over time with hardware costs plummeting, it became less effective to do that. Program maintenance is more costly so good programming style is often more important than machine efficiency.


But, the programs back then didn't do nearly the work that is done today. The mainframe I described above would not be able to even host this forum let alone anything intensive.

I ordered another gig from my local store Monday, should be here today or tomorrow. I use DDR2 533 4200 so they didn't have it in stock. Cost is only $31 a gig. I already have 1.5 gigs so I think one more will be plenty.

I still have my TS1K. And it still works. And somewhere I have the acoustic franken-modem (300 baud) that my dad and I built for it.

Insane prices, if you ask me. I just wish machines had a higher RAM capacity that are sold, as with Vista, 8GB is the new 2GB.
