A couple of days ago, I went to a friends place, he said he could replace my broken spoke, so I go there we get the wheel off, but he couldn't get the spoke protector off to get at the spokes, is there a way to get the spoke protector off without breaking it?

i think you're going to have to pull your cogset off to get at it.

rippo, any idea on how to do that? wil I need a freehub removal wrench, or maybe a cassette removal tool?

Sounds like your friend doesn't know what he's doing, or doesn't have the right tools for the job.

Yes, you need a cassette removal tool, a chain whip, and then the proper length spoke. You'll also need a trueing stand to get it right!

Once you get the spoke protector off, leave it off.... That's as important as shaving your legs!

a2psyklnut, I think it's both, he doesn't know what he's doing, and doesn't have the right tools. I should have taken it to the LBS in the first place

If the broken spoke were on the other side it would have been an easier job. If it is on the cassette side, more tools/work is required. At least you tried!

Not saying it's difficult to do, it's really not, as long as you have all the tools and parts available.

The ONLY part of my bike that I won't work on myself is the wheels. I'll do the hubs and freehub assembly maintenance, but wheelbuilding is too much of a fine art for an amateur to attempt without guidance. My FLBS is owned by a DT master wheelbuilder, so I leave it to him.
