Foo - Reverand Billy. "Don't Shop!"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
This was featured on Nightline last night. Pretty interesting story and probably quite poignant.

That guy hangs around Union Square - he was arrested recently because he was reciting the Bill of Rights in public.

I saw this on nightline as well. I may go to see the movie.
can't hurt, although I wonder if its a performance artist at work... its a little odd - the hippy-dippy granola in me wants to cheer, but the realist in me wonders if he's not just making art of this little church.
EDIT: he is a performance artist. It was noted on Primetime Live and in several of teh YouTube videos - his group is composed of actors and artists who are trying to make a statement. However, I can appreciate and support him, knowing he is trying to make a difference.

I thought that religion was the last refuge of art...maybe that was last millenium?
Commerce seems to have devoured all of the other eligible souls.

I was called a commie, among other things even less pleasant, and almost got into several fights when, back in my high school days, I tried to get people to sign typewritten copies of the declaration of independence.

What's a reverand?
Seriously....that was hilarious. That's the coolest Xmas themed thing I've seen yet. Thanks Portis.
+ eleventy billion!!!
I support him and his rights. :)
I'm sure he's doing it for self-serving reasons but the message is good. It's not just about Christmas time. It's year round. We have several generations of Americans who are addicted to consumption and consumer goods.
This never gets discussed because almost EVERYONE is guilty. You don't see Dr. Phil of Oprah talking about it, because they are two of the larger offenders. Look, i'm all for Capitalism, but it's the addiction to consumer goods that I am talking about. I almost wonder if that is a byproduct of Capitalism.

+1 to all you said.
I'm guilty at times. I would like to stop. You may be on to something about it being a byproduct of Capitalism itself.

I'm guilty too. I was just in a big box store this morning and immediately was drawn to all of the electronics, at which point my head started to spin. I'm starting to get sick of it. Don't get me wrong, i love my 50" plasma TV just like the next Fat Happy American, but there just becomes a point where enough is enough.
Last year my kids got so many presents that they didn't even open some of them. (I didn't buy them!) I took back two portable DVD players and my kids never even missed them. Actually my son did ask about them but it wasn't until sometime last Summer. :D
That's just wrong.

I can't access the links in the OP's original post as I'm at work / enslaved by The Man and his oppressive censorship. :D
Given human nature being what it is, you have to wonder if mixing capitalism and democracy is akin to mixing oil and water.
How the heck we're ever going to "evolve" enough to transcend/ rise above the bad side of human nature (with or w/ out capitalism) is beyond me. But the fact that we make multi-millionaires out of people such as the Olson Twins, Jessica Simpson, etc. is really not a good sign.
