Let's trade info... You teach me how to glue tubies, I teach you how to use PowerTap.

Best price at my LBS for the identical item: $2050 + $160+ in NY sales tax. Half price for a wheel/PT that's 2 years old. That works.

WOW - when I ordered my 808 w/powertap from them it cost $1,300. If I wanted to add the electronics it was $350, but I already had all that from another PT I own.
Glad I ordered mine when I did (September)!!!

Incorrect. Read more closely. $1700 PLUS $350 for electronics package (head unit, etc.). My LBS matched that very price. That Zipp crap is some priceyass schwag. Hence my procurement of eBay Sloppy 2nds.

Put it on the inside of the tire, not the outside. Proof that high FTP and brains do not mix.
Even my lunchtime ride on rollers (snowing today) is fun with a Powertap. Best schwag ever.

Do you have to take the valve stem off to get it inside the tire?
How would one thread it through the inside, kind of like a drawstring on some old sweatpants?

I dont understand powermeters. They tell you how much power you can put out and then you can look at it on a neat little graph, is this all they do or am i missing something? Also, i can see how it can help you train smarter but really cant a simple cyclocomputer do the same thing with speed? Im sure im missing something as so many pros use it and people swear by it, but for that much money all i can think about is all the food that i would be able to buy instead.

A computer plus a heart rate monitor can do a lot. However, to measure exercise intensities above OBLA/LT you need a power meter or ergometer.

I looked at a pair of identical auctions like you describe above for a pair of 2005 Zipp 404 clinchers with a PT SL rear hub/electronics, passed on it a few months ago, maybe that was the auction you won, I thought I'd see these things much more frequently, but they turned out to be pretty few and far between.

That's the rumor. Guess I have to gain it back with Ceramic BB (my tubies are glued...but really, if I was going for maximum watt savings, shouldn't I be using clinchers?)

To answer your question with a question:
How does your speedometer distinguish between your effort level at 25mph on the flats vs. 13mph up a hill?
If you're just using a speedometer, you'd think you were going super hard at some point during the ride, and just loafing around for another part, when in fact you could be putting forth the same amount of effort. A power meter helps show you the amount of power you're producing. It is completely independent of HR (which lags behind power spikes, and stays elevated after decreases in power) and will never lie about the effort you're producing. 330 watts is 330 watts, whether you're going 35mph with a tailwind or going 12mph up the side of a mountain.

Yeah, I realized this on my first ride with the PT. Never again in my life will I look at a downhill false flat or a tailwind the same again. 30mph doesn't feel nearly as good with 170W in my face.

Ok, so i realize that a powertap is much more accurate, universal, and precise. But i still don't see the reason for dishing out $1000+ for it. A simple cyclomputer might not help to distinguish your effort level on flat vs. incline, but if you do them seperately it seems a computer would work the same way, especially if youve ridden the road before.
For example you could just time yourself on a climb starting from a given spot at the base to a given spot at the top. Then just try to improve your time. Surly a faster time in this case would indicate an increase in performance. But i guess some people just need to have their gadgets.

week one the wind is in your face at 20mph. the 2nd week you have a tailwind of 15 mph. if your time up the hill on the second week was faster than first week, did you improve your fitness between week one and two?

Reed: Clincher or Tubular? How much $? Inquiring Bike Schwag Addicts want to know. Where in the Hudson Valley are you Reed? We could hook up for a ride and you could humiliate me in person.
The Hudson Valley sucks. I was about to ride this morning, but at 6AM it was TWELVE DEGREES here. That I could handle but the friggin roads were also coated with JUST enough snow to dump you on your bike weenie ass. I'll ride later. On the plus side, they're blowing snow @ Mt. Peter. Soon I'll be doing my 34 second summit to base runs. Pcad can out-ski all of you pathetic bike weenie snow bunnies. Volkls RULE.
Let's see: Tubular, 2k, New Windsor near Vails Gate. Let me know when you might be going out during DAYLIGHT hours, I'll meet you. If you remember we rode together in Warwick earlier this year. The Fred World RR Champs I believe you called it!
I just took the Sheltie out and it's still ONLY 15 degrees outside!!

Our resident schwag-meister got the SL version laced to a 404.
If you're willing to accept an older, heavier, uglier version, with a non-aero rim, you can get it cheaper.
