the original post is 26.6 and i bought a 26.2. i was hoping to just use the seatpost clamp to secure it

Well, I would imagine it might wiggle inside the seat tube if not quite tight. That seems like a really small difference though, small enough that you might not be able to really make or purchase an effective shim, but small enough that it might not really matter.

I suspect you'll put all the forces at the clamp area instead of distributing it along the slightly longer distance that it is supposed to normally come in contact with the seat-tube.

Yup. You can shim with a carefully trimmed pop can. Do NOT over torque the clamp.

26.6 to 26.2 in the world of seatpost sizing is significant. There's even a size between the two, 26.4. They don't make them in .2mm increments for nothing. I suggest getting the right size post.
