View Full Version : Shooting at a local mall...

I went to the mall that's a half mile from our office, as they have a sporting goods store, and I needed to get some chain degreaser. When I came back to work, I heard sirens and the VP came on over the intercom and said there was a shooting at the mall. It must have happened five or ten minutes after I left... The mall is locked down, and the cop chopper is flying overhead. I guess five people were shot, and the guy is still at large. They've locked our office down...

This is crazy...

Clearly they didn't see the "No Firearms" sign that's posted at every entrance to every mall in America.

That's what my boss said...

They have a live feed... people are leaving the mall with their hands over their heads.

Another senseless tragedy. Reminds me of the book Odd Thomas.

That's what happens when the big box electronic store doesn't stock enough PS3 systems for Christmas.

Seriously though.....glad you got out before the mall lockdown, April.

No, it's America.

Glad to see that you weren't directly involved.

True. I'm sheltered. ;)

Yeah, no kidding... where in IA are you?

Ames. But I've been to Omaha plenty of times. My mom used to work for Metro Community College and lived in the housing there on campus.

Glad you're ok, Aprilm. But, sadly, this is just becoming the norm here. It's not about "living in America" for all the dikwads from other places who are dyin' to chime in. It's about living in a densely-populated area that values individual freedom.

The question is: where do we go from here? :(

That address, while it should be obvious, is not on this map, KT. Next constructive suggestion? ;)

Next constructive suggestion? ;)

Fire is cleansing, though nuclear weaponry might be more efficient. Wipe the remaining slate clean with a horde of radioactive zombies and Zomppies™, and all will be well.

*edit* there's even live coverage on BBC world right now.

it's made the news:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071205/ap_on_re_us/mall_shooting

OMAHA, Neb. - At least one person was shot Wednesday at a busy Omaha mall, and police locked down the shopping center while they searched for a gunman.

It was unclear whether the shooter was still inside the mall or whether other people were wounded at the Westroads Mall. Two people were seen being removed on stretchers, and rescue workers were taking more stretchers inside the building.

Omaha television station KETV reported that an elderly man was shot inside the Von Maur department store.

Keith Fidler, a Von Maur employee, said he heard a burst of five to six shots followed by 15 to 20 more shots. Fidler said he huddled in the corner of the men's clothing department with about a dozen other employees until police yelled to get out of the store.

Fidler said he did not see the shooting but saw a person lying still by an elevator as he was leaving the store.

A woman who answered the phone at an Old Navy store said 20 to 30 customers were huddled with employees in a back storeroom.

"All we know was people were running and screaming down the hallway by Von Maur saying there was a shooting, and then they locked us down," said the woman, who said her name was Heidi.

Police were allowing some people to leave the mall, but no one was permitted to enter.

President Bush was in town Wednesday for a fundraiser in Omaha, but left about an hour before the shooting.

Looks like the shooter tried to suicide but failed, and is in custody.

I don't think there were any quail in that mall....could be wrong, it is the midwest, but I doubt it.
And I'd think Cheney already learned his lesson.

Five shot, with one dead, possibly two from what I've heard...

A co-worker was there, and a woman (whose head was grazed by a bullet) came at her screaming, "They're killing everybody!"

We do it to ourselves. We have the power to change anything. It's all about me in America. I seriously doubt our desire to sacrifice for the benefit of the whole. :(

Indeed. I was first thinking of Omaha, but you're quite right. This stuff really is redefining us as a nation. Not that it's completely unheard of elsewhere, but we got more than our share.
