"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Indoor training and the effect of heat stress on HR

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I think everyone here knows that at a constant effort your HR will drift upwards overtime due to heat stress, dehydration, etc. In an attempt to measure my thermal cardiac drift I did a little heat stress experiment on my computrainer in ergometer mode. On consecutive days I did short submaximal workout that would be intense enough to bring on some heat stress, while still being short enough to rule out significant dehydration and heat illness. Yesterday I did the workout without a fan, today with a fan.

You can see that for the first 6.5min the HR data correlates beautifully ruling out calibration differences. This also indicates that at first, while you warm up to the new setting, the fan does nothing. However, after that the effect of the fan is dramatic; by the end of 5min at 300W the HR difference averages 6bpm (3% of 204MHR).

“It’s the same wattage who cares about HR?”

Sure, it’s all about the watts but if you overheat and blow up to much over 90% of max HR your internal thermostat will tell the central governor to decrease muscle fiber recruitment. In a race at the same wattage what condition would you rather be? Don’t ignore HR data; it should be able to tell us a huge amount. Why HR monitors won’t give us the derivative is beyond me, it could tell so much more….

Has someone proved that the Central Governor exists? I thought it was still a theory. Did Dr. Noakes make a breakthrough?

Can’t prove anything, but we know the brain exists. :) Good to see others have read some of Noakes work. Lore of running is probably the best book on exercise physiology I have ever read.

Thanks for the tip. I just put it on my books to read list. I have one more before this one.

Thats cool.

Weve got a local guy that can do 2x20s averaging ~420 watts he will raise the temperture in the computrainer room 5+ degrees.

Eek. Who does 2x20s @ 420 here? Please tell me they're at least a 2...

Tis bikeforums.net.... everybody does 2x20 @ 420! Give me 2 minutes and I can post a graph to prove it.

Teammate o' mine is 21, 75kg and been riding for 3 years. He's approaching that. His last 20min test was 410w. Current Pro/1/2 state TT champ. I wouldn't be surprised if he's hitting well over 400 in his 2-3x20min reps soon.

And, I can raise the temperature of my garage from freezing to comfortable in two hours. Kinda gross.

5.5 w/kg @ 75 kilos is scary fast. Makes the magic 6.7 w/kg number all that much more scary.

Youv'e heard of John Paterson right?

He rode on the same team with lemond the year he won the tour the second time. I think he did a 19:30 10 mile out at lowes.
