Why are coffee stirrers designed so short and flimsy?

In a normal cup you can barely reach the bottom without dipping your fingers in hot coffee. In a larger cup like a mug they don't work at all.

Why can't they make them a little stiffer so that you can stir and feel like your actually moving the coffee around instead of the just watching the stirrer bend?
</rant>

For those who are just going to come in and say "drink your coffee black".....I was making coffee in a steep cup and just trying to stir the grounds around in the water better.

But you were going to put milk & sugar in it, weren't you? :)

Use a spork! Do I have to tell you everything?

Well, before you ruined it with an explanation, I was going to say put the cream and sugar in first. No need to stir.

I use a french press every day. I have a few chopsticks shamelessly stolen from the pseudo-americanized-pan-asian place across the street. they make excellent devices for stirring the brew.

Step 1: Put cream or milk or 1/2 & 1/2 into desired coffee mug.

Step 2: Pour in coffee

Step 3: Enjoy beverage.

No need for a stirring stick. They are a waste.

That's my method too and I usually take it with me into the break room where the hot water is. I had just forgot it today.

Before this gets too out of control, here's something to balance the conversation that truly does need to be stirred....

My suggestion is:

Because most people know how much sugar and dry creamer they take in their coffee, only fill the cup half way when adding the sugar and dry creamer. These are the item that are the hardest to mix and dissolved. Then use two or three stirrers if the plastic type and if using the wooden type use only one. After the sugar and what ever else is dissolved top it off. If you’re like me and don’t use dry creamer’s then poor in the cream or milk and one quick swizzle. You’re ready to drink. There you go. :D

It makes a much better cup of coffee than drip. It's essentially a small (16 oz) cup that effectively does the same thing a french press does.

It's designed for tea, but can be used for coffee just as well.

It has a cup with a mesh wire filter on the bottom. There is kind of a "press plate" on the bottom of the cup that lets the liquid drain through filter and out the bottom of the cup. So you steep the coffee and water for a few minutes and then set it on top of your mug (activating the press plate) so it drains into your mug.

Completely off-topic but what's the deal with DD coffee? The DD they put out here went out of business quickly. I try their coffee every time I go East and I don't get it... I keep thinking it's going to taste great like everyone I know east of the Mississippi reports, but it tastes like the interior cardboard of a Cracker Jack box (ass basically).

Back on-topic: As for the stirrer. I think the wooden ones are a tad more useful than the completely useless plastic straw ones. But they don't work well enough for me to add cream and sugar. I've given up hope on any solution to this problem during my lifetime so I just went to black. I drink it black at home too so I won't be distraught when I go to a coffee shop. :p

I was about to suggest this very thing. The plastic stirrers get thrown away, so why not make them out of wood? I would replace the coffee stirrers with the little bamboo skewers without the points.

I'd heard for years how great DD coffee was. I finally tried it and wasn't sure what the fuss was about. I liked Mcdonalds coffee better than DD. I tried again in case it was a bad cup....same thing.
