Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Its a fad...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I don't know if this has been posted, but its interesting... and from NW Arkansas.

The hipness of urban bike messengers, who deliver packages and letters in big cities, is another lure. For them, a fixedgear bike is a necessity, because they often have their hands full and stopping can be accomplished with only the legs (if they’re strong enough ).
Thomas Hinkle, a historian for the Bicycle Museum of America in Ohio, believes the popularity of spinning classes has fueled the trend. Those machines also require constant pedaling.
HAHAHA silly ****....

spinning classes? wtf?
I thought the article was lifted from BikeSnobNYC's thing the other day. I love the "let's interview the guy who's been riding for 2 weeks" thing.
They are behind the times, mopeds are where it's at:
In the '80s and '90s, hipsters revived vintage scooters until the yuppies bought in. Then the cool but unkempt crowd turned to track bikes.
Now there's a new cool king on the city's two-wheeled transport scene: the moped.
What happens when one SF Weekly reporter dares to penetrate the inner circles of post-track-bike hipsters (http://www.sfweekly.com/2007-11-07/news/the-angry-moped-gangs-of-san-francisco/)
Eazy-E would not approve.

But few people, if any, take fixed-gear bikes on rides of 25 miles or more.
spinning classes? wtf?
My thoughts exactly.
But few people, if any, take fixed-gear bikes on rides of 25 miles or more.
I don't know that they have any evidence of that, but I would be it is true. I think that would be true of most bikes, drivetrains inclusive.

DAMN! I was going to post this!
To be fair to Arkansans (of which i am one), that article was picked up off the wires. ...even so, I'd be willing to bet that half the people on this board could not ride more than 25 miles on a fixie in NW Arkansas. It's Ozark country.
For actual NW Arkansas news coverage, I suggest the following: http://nwacrimereport.blogspot.com/
Much more entertaining.

Yeah, I thought it was odd that all the quotes were from Nor/Cent. California.

No bike on Specialized’s new line costs more than $ 1, 000. A similar grade of road bike could easily cost more than $ 5, 000.
Quick, somebody slap some Sora deraillers on a Langster and get you a couple grand

Mopeds aren't new though. The moped army's been around for years. I owned several mopeds before even seeing anybody around here ride fixed on the street. A motor vehicle you can buy for $75, and gets 150mpg. and doesn't need plates or insurance, is the best way to state that "I'm too cheap and too lazy to own a bike"
I've always like slow two wheeled things. For me it went Bicycle -> Moped -> Vespa -> Moped -> Bicycle. Circle of life and all that.
Someone posted that on the shop wall where I work. :(

they need plates and need to be registered here. you also have to wear a helmet. (if you're subject to helmet laws).

Can you please tell me where you're getting mopeds for $75? I would love me one at that price.

I was into mopeds, before I bought a bike. Then I got rid of my moped to free up room for more bikes in the garage. You're telling me I did this backwards?
