General Cycling Discussion - bike for special needs

does any have or know of someone that has a special needs bike more for physical impairments.
im doing a project and the info could really help me

most will be handcycle trikes

google them


for other handicaps, most riders use normal bikes and prosthetics

for balance/vertigo/ear problems, people use normal or custom trikes


if you search around the intertubes you'll find more focus

I've not seen an actual bicycle for special needs- just various 3-wheelers. I think Worksman makes some, and I've seen some jumbo tricycles on Ebay (front-wheel-pedal like a kid's trike).

I just posted this in the Texas forum:

Due to my daughter's muscle issues, (she uses a wheelchair part of the time), she is unable to balance on a bicycle. We got her an adult trike and she loves it. We ride every weekend around the neighborhood and to the grocery store.

The only modification I made was clips & toe straps to help her keep her feet on the pedals. She's now decided that she needs a multispeed since sometimes I have to reach over and help pull her up the hills.

Handcycle, for a young man who has limited use of his legs.

For balance problems and those with CP or muscle problems, who still have the use of their legs, normal or recumbent bicycles can do the trick. For paraplegics, handcycles. Handcycles are often based on recumbent trikes, but not always. Here's another place to find special needs trikes

there used to be a fellow with 1 arm who raced xc in WV & who had all his shifters/brakes mounted on one side. There was also a guy with 1 leg who used to do the 24 hour race at Snowshoe - but he used a regular bike.

There's a disabled vet organization which encourages & supports outdoor sports & helps adapt equipment for the vets, but I can't recall the name - google disabled vets and MTB & I'm sure it will pop up.
