It would probably take over 600 dollars worth of tools to make one properly. Doesn't seem worth while.

I think it would be a nice project to take on. But I wouldn't use mango wood- I'd prefer a nice black walnut or even oak would do, for that mission-y look. Or you could go crazy with curly maple. Even at that, it would be cheaper than $600.

Only if you bought Dremmel stuff which is overpriced by 5-12 times.

I'd bet you could do it with a router and table (and a dovetail jig if you want to do the drawers right), a table saw, a finishing sander, and a couple of other hand tools- all under $600 (unless you go top of the line), and then look on the bright side- you'd have the tools for the next project!

Well you still gotta factor in cost of tools since most people won't have the necessary tools to pull everything off.

Right- although think of the fun doing this with nothing but a jack plane, a spokeshave, a set of chisels, a backsaw, and a brace and bit :p

700$ for a POS crate and barrel product, that's FUGLY to boot.

dude, spend 100$ on some books about design, or a a couple hundred bucks on a professional shopper to help cultivate your taste.

White oak is the only way to go with that style. You would have to fume it with ammonia to get that authentic arts and crafts look. The finish on that mango is kind of splotchy like pine gets.

A table like that would be a good first major woodworking project. It is remarkably simple.

I don't think it's an ugly table. It even sounds well constructed. I'm not certain why they went with the wood/stain combo they did, but meh... that's their call to make.
I do think it's seriously overpriced, though.

One of the coolest tables I've seen was a project that a couple friends made. They used an old door as the tabletop, made tile mosaics in each of the door inset panels, and had a custom glass plate cut and beveled for the top. There wasn't anything fancy about the supporting structure, just that the top was really awesome.

yeah- on second look at the pic, I agree- I was thinking of it as more of a mission-style (you know, I saw what I wanted to see :p). I've never worked with mango, have you? Can you condition it so it takes stain more evenly?

I've never seen mango available here in the states.

I received a new Woodcraft magazine this week that features some mission style tables. They have a two step process for a finish that looks like fumed oak. I haven't read it yet, but it looks like it has promise.

Ahhh, the irony... :)

Actually, I just really liked the idea of having the display element. The thread was really just a joke, as I'd probably try and find something similar for much cheaper; however, I'm not having much luck anywhere else. I have about 90 ticket stubs from my days on Phish tour that I want to display somehow, and this seemed like a great way to do it.

It was all just in fun...

Kidding.

Aside from most people here...if you like the table, the wood, the construction, and the concept of it, and the price is good for you...then go for it. Chances are there's not another furniture maker/distributor that has that same table. Sometimes C&B gets it right.

But, look at Pier 1, and heck even Target to see if you can find essentially the same thing for $400 or less.

Oh, that's exactly where I started two months ago... This is the closest thing I've found to what I want. But I don't want to pay $700 bucks for it. I'd be willing to go $350 or $400, but what they're asking just seems inasne for what it is. I have a friend with some tools who could help me make exactly what I want, but I don't know what time commitment I'm willing to make. I have to be able to display ticket stubs and transit cards underneath glass, though. That's a must.
