Winter Cycling - Calories burned in the cold vs. warm

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How much does your base metabolic rate ( BMR ) rise in colder temps? In colder weather the body loses heat much faster so has to burn more calories to keep warm. Any equations for this? It may not be linear since the body shuts down blood flow to extremities.
I've always heard that your body has to work harder to cool you off than to warm you up.
