Mountain Biking - My new Kona Dawg......but......

Guess what people, i finall got my new bike today. Here is a quick pic.

I payed 1550 after tax. They only offered 150 discount. They would not go any lower than that after 20 mins of talking. Fine with me. Actually i think it was a good idea that i did buy it from them. You know why?

If you notice, my front tire is not attached. You may be wondering why isnt on? If you dont know, Kona Dawg some with Shimano Hydroylic disc brakes. If you own hyrdo brakes, you know you are not supposed to press the brake when the tire is removed. if you do, the brake pad locks up.

Well guess what? When my roommate was taking the bike of the car and was trying to get the front tire back on.....he tried to press the rear brake to keep it from moving, and pressed the front brake locking it. I didnt even own the bike for 1 hr and this happends and i need to take it back to get it fixed. The lady who was there told me as i left....DONT PRESS THE BRAKE THEN THE WHEEL IS OFF. And he did. When he did....he said opps...and there was dead silence. We just looked at each other and see if we would put it back...and we werent able to. It was obvious that it had locked up. I have to take it back tomorrow morning.

QUESTION: How do i prevent this tomorrow when i bring it home again for the 2nd time?

Simple, you take bike off by your self.

Even simpler than that, dont press the brake lever when the front wheel is off.

wow guys...such innovative ideas. but seriously...is there a way? i mean...what if?

congrats on the new ride...maybe you should constantly remind yourself cuz i dont; think theres any other way to solve that.

place something b/t the handlebar and brake lever and elastic band it in place. or I hear you can get a shipping spacer for the calipers. I guess when the calipers are shipped, there is a spacer b/t it so the pistons don't vibrate shut.

Or you can gently pry the pads apart with a clean flat head screw driver or other flat tool.

uhh....that doesnt like a good thing to do. has anyone else done this before?

Yeah, I've had to do it with my Mini's, it works, just make sure the screw driver is clean

if that does work, then why does my LBS tell me that its best to bleed them to fix it. its not going to cost me anything this time i guess but if this happens when im not near my LBS, i wouldnt want drop money to fix it each time.

Best to bleed them first? I've never heard that, the pistons are just compressed and the fluid is back, there is no pressure on the pistons so I see no reason to bleed them

i have. i got a pair of magura julies on my bike... i locked up the calipers by accident one day and used a flathead screw driver to pry them apart.

i was checking the papers that i got when i bought the bike just a couple of days ago and on magura's instructions it actually says to do this... it says to gently try to wedge the screw driver between the pads and then wiggle it back and forth until the pads unlock.

okay...just got back from the bike shop. the main dude wasnt there but i guess it was an apprentice that was there to help me fix it. all he did was wiggle a screwdriver into and it popped back open.

BUT...as he was doing that i noticed something fall off the brake....when he was done and left me alone to hold the bike i took a closer look at it and saw that he wiggled it too hard and broke off a piece of the graphite. :mad: :mad: :mad:

i didnt want to yell at the kid cus i didnt know what the hell i was talking about but then i take it back in for maintaince in 4 weeks, ill be sure to mention it.

That loss of graphite is not too big of a deal.

Place cardboard and tape it in between the pads to stop the problem.

Prying them open is completely safe. Although I would go be the recommendation by hayes. Take the pads out use a 10mm box wrench and pry open not touching the mountain nipple.

the kid who fixed it gave me hayes blockage piece that he insert in btw the calipers. cool beans.
