And I stayed warm........... actually got kind of hot and sweaty a bit............. I need to find just the right amount of clothing to wear and the right exertion level to stay dry as well as warm. Didn't make any difference wearing wicking type of clothing. I would have froze my butt off without having a full fairing. The bottom is enclosed as well with just enough room to put my feet down to get out of the bike. The rear of the bike pivots upward at the top of the windshield and I climb out the rear end. Kind of like Jim Carrey squeezing out of the Rhino in Ace Ventura 2. Ken has the white trike and I concocted up the pink 1/4" foam trike. The frame is built out of 3/4" and 1/2" cpvc pipe. There are 3 points on the frame where the body connects on the front section and 2 points on the rear. It takes all of 3 minutes to remove entire body and about 5 to put it back on . I'll take some interior pictures and post. I'll probably be painting the outside of the body with white primer plastic paint.
Ken and I took off last saturday to South Haven Mi and rode the Kal-haven trail which goes between South Haven and Kalamazoo. The temp stayed a pretty constant 25 t0 27 degree with dry conditions and no snow until the last hour of the ride in which it started dropping ice pellets and snow. We didn't make it to Kalamazoo. Not enough daylight hours to do the trip without starting out a bit earlier in the day. We hit the trail at 11:00 am and got back around 4:30 pm.
We set a blistering pace on the trail with an overall average speed of 9.8mph. Pathetic, I'm used to doing 33 miles in just over an hour, not taking almost 3 1/2 hours to go that distance. It was fun though with nice scenery through the woods. Only saw one other bike on the trail......... some older guy on a mountain bike that looked like he was freezing to death. We stopped at a town roughly halfway to kalamazoo and looked for a restraunt.......... gee, nothing open, so we went to the deli at the grocery store in town........... parked in front of the store on the sidewalk. The locals sure enjoyed staring at the trikes. Nobody could believe we were out riding bikes that day.
I should note that the kal-haven trail is not a paved trail. It is a crushed limestone surface for the most part and from what I could tell......... they NEED some more limestone............ areas of the trail were starting to look more like dirt than limestone. Ken and I had fun trying to pass each other on the trail . The two trikes side by side take up the entire trail width. I had fun sneaking up along side him and pushing him off the trail like bumper cars then screaming on past him in a sprint............ sprint being maybe 18 to 20 mph.........
I've got a few minor modifications to do to the bike and I think it will be perfected for my winter riding until I can get back out on the nocom in the spring. I think Alan should do some photo shopping of my pink trike......... maybe some rocket boosters or frilly lace or something...........
