Hi, i'm trying to get an idea of how people use thier bikes, and in particular if you find any problems with your chain while using your bike in this activity.

Cheers

The only chain problem I had, was when one wore out and I replaced it. I figure it should be years before I need a new one..

Other - sometimes hang clothes to dry on. The only times I had chain problems was when I stretched mine out causing some slipping under load. I also had an incident that caused my chain to get all kinked but that was a freak thing involving a stick, spokes, and rd.

"Other" means "Riding around for fun" which wasn't on the list. Chain is fine, thank you.

Depends on the season. About 2k/year commuting. Another 3-4k in exercise/recreation/racing/sight seeing. No chain issues.

I use my bicycle(s) for ultra distance events such as randonneuring, 24-hour races, and centuries, for touring, for commuting, for training, for recreational riding, and while I'm doing all that, I get some exercise.

And no, I have no problem with my chain. I'm on the second chain on my most used bicycle now. The first one lasted about 35,000 kms (3 years). This second one is still going just fine at about 13,000 kms (1.5 years).

Why do you ask?

OTher mean just riding for enjoyment for me. No problems with chain. What kind of problems do you have?

I generally like to use my bike to move me places. Is this some kind of "market research"?

I don't think the bike knows, or would care if it did know, what the purpose of the ride is.

No chain problems at all on my road bike. I live in a dusty/sandy area, and the mountain bike goes through them occasionally, but I lube regularly (usually ProLink; sometimes a goopier lube in wet weather) and they last about as long as I expect them to.
I spread about 3000-4000 miles a year among four bikes, though, so I don't get a lot of miles on any one.

I ride my bicycle for a number of reasons: 1) exercise 2) commuting, 3) training, 4) trips to get errands done, 5) touring, 6) recreational riding 7) some off-road riding, 8) some distance riding such as half and three-quarter century rides, and for fun.

Enough said.

Yes I do have a problem with my chain, it doesn't have any bling!

Mainly a commuter here, but I also checked exercise, important enough to consider it one of the "main" uses. Of course they are really one in the same, since lately I've rarely been riding only for the exercise. Bike commuting is a great time-saver. In fact it's a great thing, period.

As far as the chain is concerned, I'm still on my original one, and the bike is around 8 years old, though before this year it was used very little for several years. I've never had a problem with it. The amount of chain stretch I have now is very little, and before this year I rarely did any maintenance at all on it. Now I know better, and around once a week or when it gets rained on (more than a light drizzle) I wipe it off and re-lubricate it.

I'm always surprised how greasy and dirty it gets, but then again I've been using up the 3-in-1 oil I bought way too much of, which is probably a dirt collector. When I'm running out of that I'll look for something more appropriate.

I'm curious why the OP posted the question.

The question about what we do on our bicycles is relatively common, but the addition of the question about the chain was a new touch ... I'm wondering what difference the OP thinks the type of cycling we do makes.

I use my 3 single bikes and 1 tandem to hold down the ceiling of our garage; they hang from hooks and that works ok as long as I only remove one at a time. I do get some exercise while cycling to and from work and for fun.

Exercise, commuting, and other.

The other is utility biking which I'm surprised wasn't in your poll.

No chain problems.

Ah ha! I've figured it out. The OP has made exactly 2 posts on this forum. One was this thread ... the other was a poll about Belt Drives: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=363873

Could this be a marketing pitch for belt drives?

OP, you might want to contact the people who are associated with the events on my Links page: http://www.machka.net/links.htm They ride long, long, long distances on their bicycles and need their chains to stand up to hours and days of constant moving in all sorts of weather.
