Mountain Biking - Anyone with ISIS experience?

Anyone have horror stories yet? Or praise? I need a new bottom bracket/crankset and I'm considering going ISIS, but I read a lot of bad reviews about ISIS fitment and longevity (esp. with the bearings).

Can you guys help me decide between a square taper vs. an ISIS set?

Hehe i am in exactly the same spot. although i am also considering to wait untill February for the New RF splined system. I wouldnt pay much attention to the reviews at mtbr.com. ISIS had troubled bearings in the early bb releases but now i think its fine. Truvativ launched a series of ISIS bb that seem veeeery promising, the gigapipes that feature ISIS spline,larger bearings and still fit a normal frame, this seems quite promising. My problem is that i intend to get RF turbines LP so its a considerable amount of money and i dont want to invest it to a system (ISIS or ST) that dies....

I am using currently a FSA V Drive Extreme crank with a Ultimax Pro b.b. this setup is ISIS and have no complaints.

I have been using ISIS for a year and I have had absolutely no problems.

I will be using ISIS and i (hopefully) have no problems.

Isis is fine. Raceface had some issues with bearing at the beginning of the year but that has been fixed.

Isis is a good system, however try to avoid the Tru Vativ stuff, the interface on those cranks will strip at some point depending on how intense you ride. But good luck in your search

Truvative has added steel inserts for 04. Should be good to go and competitve.

So basically its still an infant technology ... can't help but think of those obsolete ones like SPD-R, etc.

Everything for mtb is in its infancy. Thats why things seem to change so much. If you think about it with the varried market (xc riders, freeriding/jumping (not trailriding guys), and dh) you have a lot of parts companies are trying to experiment with. Especially with concerns to suspension, but thats another storey. I doubt the new rf or shimano splines will be the last we wll see of changes in the industry as a whole. Pretty excitiing but remind me of the good old days of computers where everything that hit the market was new...I remember the day cd-roms became public, man was that exciting - anyways I regress. To answer your question - I think isis will be obsolete at some point. But I also don't think 1 standard will satisfy all parties.

Good to hear. Thats the setup I am considering until I can afford the new/sexy raceface stuff :)

If it were a large difference in price, I would get the square tapered in a heartbeat. I've had no problems with it, and while I'm not bashing the new splined "technology" I wouldn't go out of my way to get it. If it ain't broke.. don't fix it :D

That's true ... I guess the hardware doesn't make the ride ... I mean the best bike with the best components won't go anywhere unless the rider is in shape. Thanks for the insights. I might just go with a square taper bottom bracket after all, for compatibility's sake. That way I can hold off on getting a new crankset.
