Sierra Nevada Brown Ale is more drinkable that Newcastle but still far from excellent, maybe a C or C+ at best.

Yeah, newcastle sucks. New Glarus (wisconsin) makes a decent nut brown ale called the 'fat squirrel.' Samuel Smith makes one, too. I don't think I've ever had it, but his other brews are pretty tasty (and strong).

You should listen to botto. He's tasted both and knows the similarity in taste.

Don't know that they're the best but they're good.

I won't pretend to know which is best. But they are usually very good. I recommend trying them all.

Not sure if it qualifies as "brown", but a damn good ale is Kilkenny!

According to this wiki article, you can't get it in the US!

Wychwood's Hobgoblin is pretty dang tasty. Brooklyn Brown, Wolaver's Brown, and Dogfish Head India Brown are also some really good ones that haven't been mentioned yet.

It's not just the color, it's a particular style, usually with the words "brown ale" somewhere on the label, like some of the ones mentioned above. Goose Island's Hex Nut Brown is pretty tasty, and the original Pete's Wicked ale is a brown ale. I'm in the Chicago area, so some of the more regional ones mentioned here I haven't even heard of. I can't believe I was in Dillon, CO 2 weeks ago skiing and didn't see the Sweet George's Brown.:( I've seen the Ellie's Brown around here. I'll give it a try. Any others?

It's hard to get the smell of vomit out of handlebar tape. Does terrible things to bike computers.

That's funny, I swore to dog I saw it at Shep's over here. Maybe I need to stockpile....

Samuel Smith's nut brown is my idea of what a brown ale should be....actually the entire Sam Smith's lineup are quite tasty....I love their Oatmeal Stout something fierce.

I'd have never thought a beer called "Moose Drool" could have a taste so much like what you might legitimately expect moose drool to taste like. Even more remarkable...I never would have expected that taste to be so delicious!

Would be cooler if you could replace the word 'NEW' with 'NOZZLE'

Oh I've found it ... many times. It's very, very good stuff on tap. Perhaps a good 2nd if my Sammy Smith has gone missing.

Luckily, beer appreciation is a fairly inexpensive endeavor. Everyone's tastes are different. My advice is to try a few and find your favorite.

That's too bad. The Dillon Dam Brewery has good food and quite a few good beers. Maybe next time.
