I've never seen an AMC Eagle Son-Of-Gremlin like that. Huh.

Those Eagles were pretty neat, in a somewhat bizarre way. I wouldn't mind an SX/4 (http://www.javelinamx.com/javhome/jwr/82sx4/).

Considering the current AWD craze, AMC was pretty far ahead of its time with all the 4WD stuff they had back then. Too bad Chrysler decided to buy them out and eviscerate them just to get their hands on Jeep.

My sis had a Gremlin. White with black racin' stripes. Three-speed on the floor. Used to be able to take the key out of the ignition while drivin' on down the road. :p Was also very easy to start in winter, with some "Thrust" and the inside of a ballpoint pen, and a runnin' start, so to speak. Oh, and we couldn't ride over about 10mph through 3-4" of standing water, lest the low-lyin' distributor get wet! :D

Ohhhh, but what a sweet car. :)

Nice batteries!

Seems like AMC was a victim of natural selection. The Eagle was a good idea that the Japanese and Europeans could (and did) pull off, but, sadly, American car makers could not.

If you need parts look in Colorado, they sold a lot of them there, most are in the junkyards, and the cars are not rusty.

There is a reason they are rare. My mom owned a Gremlin Wagon, that was just a piece of crap car for sure.

There was no such thing as a Gremlin Wagon, hust the plain Gremlin, there was a Pacer wagon, but not a Gremlin wagon.

I know you're into it and all, but rare crap is still crap, and there's a reason it's both rare and crap. My dad once had a '59 Rambler, after every rain we had to pop the drain plugs in the floorboards. Gremlins and Pacers were equally garbage. So was the Pinto and the Horizon, GM had one too but the name escapes me; plenty of crap to spread around. It's almost as if the Big Three wanted small cars to fail so that they could sell everyone an SUV in the 80s.

The only AMC I have ever heard many people say were bad were the Matador Coupes. The only problems I have with my wagon are rotted window seals that leak and failing inspection from the previous owner removing the emissions control, the Kammback has many problems (besides leaking) but she has 300,000 miles so that is a good excuse.

Vega!! It made the Pinto look like a Honda Accord. The only one worth buying was the Cosworth, and even then the body was still a piece of crap. I almost bought an SX/4 once. It was a ton of fun in wet grass, lol.,,,,BD

Matador X Coupe, I guess I'm one of the few that like them.:D

Well it was a Wagon of some type, it was an AMC vehicle and it still was a piece of junk.

12-07-07, 08:11 PM
the Eagle was a four wheel drive, right? most of the ones I've seen are four door wagons. I suppose the three door hatchback style is what makes them rare, but it's really just a gremlin body on a shortened frame, right? or did these predate the later wagons?

randya
12-07-07, 08:13 PM
what makes them rare is that they are in jersey and haven't rusted out yet.

Heh. Vega. I had me one. :) But not a Cosworth. :(

Yet, I don't have but one, uh, two bad memories in my Vega. Heh. ;) I loves me my Vega.

The wagon was the highest production one, produced the Eagle's entire life, the Kammback is the second rarest body style only about 5603 in 81 (mine is an 81) and 520 in 82 , first if you don't include the extremely rare Sundancer Convertible. Yeah, the Kammback is basiacally a Gremlin body, and the Wagon was based on the Hornet Sportabout

Wow. I still see a few AMCs running around here, but we never salt roads, but it never snows. I even owned an AMC built Jeep. Does that first one have a Pontiac Iron-Duke engine? Those will run forever if maintained properly. You don't even need to change a timing belt.

Bobby Allison swept both Darlington races in 1975 with Roger Penske owned Matadors.

I love everything that AMC made. They were all so damn ugly. I really loved the Matador. I think this might be my favorite AMC though:

I learned to drive on a '73 AMC Hornet Wagon 3-speed column shift, and a '76 Chevy Vega automatic.

As the Hornet wagon was aging, my dad replaced it with a '70 AMC Hornet Coupe. When I got my drivers license, no one at my HS would ride with me in the '73 Hornet -- they nicknamed it the Deathtrap. The brakes barely worked, and the body was rusting out (Wisconsin winters).

I loved the '70 Hornet, it was deceptively fast. It was black with a dark blue interior. The only markings on it were the hubcaps had HORNET spelled out around them, and there was a Hornet logo on the gas cap below the trunk lid. My girlfriend's brother used to refer to it as the Generic Car. This is the best pic I have of it:
http://www.monogodo.org/images/jpegs/hornet.jpg

The AMC 232 straight six ran like a dream in both Hornets. My dad actually considered having the AMC 232 pulled from one of the Hornets to replace the Dodge straight six in the '68 A100 van we had. The van's body was in great shape, but the engine sucked donkey. If I'd had the funds at the time, I'd have had it done.

Man, I miss those Hornets and that van. The Vega, not so much.

On the subject of rare and elusive cheapo cars, I saw a Yugo at the Dream Cruise that someone had put an enormous super charged engine into. I tried to get a picture, but wasn't quick enough.

WOW! A Supercharger Yugo? Now THAT is a cool death trap (they were totalled in the 5MPH bumper test.
There was a guy around here who had one. I have to say, I want one of those, bu only because it is an odd car
The Matador Coupe, I love those, I have heard nothing but bad things about them, but I love their styling

do all of them run&drive(well)?

are they all registered/insured/inspected?

arent some old vehicles considered "antiques" and not have to pass certain instepction standards? how does this relate to your eagles?

Eagle Kammback
12-08-07, 03:47 PM
Neither run very well at the moment, the Carb one the Wagon needs to be tuned, and I removed the carb on the Kammback because I was going to rebuild it, but then decided it would be easier to buy a new one from eBay, that carb is unrebuildable anyway, she has 300,000 miles.
The wagon runs great though, besides no accelleration from the badly tuned carb.
Kammback isn't registered, insured, inspected, or ever driven outside of my driveway. THe Wagon is and I drive hher every day, she is failing inspection and I am waiting for the previous owner to bring me the parts I need to make her pass inspection.
I hate New Jersey, car insurance is too high and they are WAAAYY too strict with emission standards

The 258 ci. inline 6 was actually a pretty strong engine. They do a conversion using the crankshaft from that engine into the 4.0 liter late Jeep inline 6. Big inches, bigger torque, and with the late head and EFI...

I like the older big AMCs, like from '55-'66 Classic and Ambassador. Big car, big fun.

I am coveting a black 72 model Javelin sitting in the lot at a local body shop. I would sell my Ramcharger, van, and maybe my RX-7 to buy it. One of the coolest looking and coolest named muscle cars, IMO. Likewise for a 68 AMX. I'd give a left part of my body for a nice example, lol.,,,,BD

Marlins are cool too, just a different kind of cool. More like Kool.

Ever seen a Ford Festiva (rebadged Kia Pride) with a 3.0 liter SHO engine, really the entire drive train, bolted in the rear? The original drive train was removed and the front end race modified.

Not with a little small aluminum block Chev in there :D

Fixed.

I hated that damned thing, especially in summer! I had a near-death experience once because it overheated and my engine cut out, just when I needed to accelarate!

Fortunately, I have other, much more pleasant memories in that car. ;)

My neighbor who lives across the street has a red AMC Eagle. It has no visible rust. The best part is that he only drives it in the snow. Otherwise, it stays in the garage covered with a tarp.
