Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I know there's been a thread like this before, but we need one that's more "lasting".
I've always been a fan of knives, unfortunitely I don't have enough!!! I actually would like to collect them.
Right now, I only have two knives worthy of note.
A gerber, spring assisted valloton.

I'll just list the stuff off that I have, I don't know where my camera's USB adapter is at the moment.
A Boker Applegate Fairbairn serrated standard length dagger, a Gerber Covert, a Tops Bowie, a collection of pre chinese Schrade Clip Hangers, a Camillus Grandpa, an old Italian Godfather, a Cold Steel voyager with the 6" blade, a short katana type thing I made with a used school paper cutter blade, an SAK and a Swiss card, a Leatherman Charge, several bayonets, and several pen knives that my now dead grandparents owned that I cherish as a means to remember them by.

I agree that they are lame, but they are quite durable, and they are good at preventing a rib cage from stopping a knife thrust. They have their uses. But, for general use, I like clip points.

I eat with my hands.
It's hard to maintain an edge, though.
a $7 knife from my hardware store that has lasted me almost four years now.
i'll add a picture when i get home, but my "everyday" knife is a 15 year old Spyderco Rescue. it's a discontinued model - it's got a fairly long blade, unlike the stubby crap they're selling today. nylon handle, stainless serrated sheepsfoot blade. use it for most anything, really.
not too good at straight, even cutting, though. but i usually use razors for that.

I'm just pissed they discontinued them...I've been trying to snag up some cheap ones in really good condition off Ebay for that reason. Both of mine are damaged though (one w/shattered screwdrivers, one w/ distorted wire cutting jaws), and I'm unsure if they will repair mine (what I'd like) or give me a model I don't want (I will NOT carry useless tools), so I may start looking for a new company to get my multi-tools from....I'd like if it had a serrated sheepsfoot blade and the regular blade was plain-edge...that would have been perfection.

A big improvement would be replaceable blades and implements. Really, you should be able to select a case size and then choose whatever implements fit in it.
Tis the season to start a new self-customized multi-tools company!
Please someone, steal this idea.

Any way to pop out the pins and put the good parts together making one good knife from the 2? As for the rust, I'd say soak it in Top Engine Cleaner or something similar for about a week.

You can get a utility knife with several types of blades. Also, there have been numerous attempts at folders with easily changed blades, but they rarely sell well due to poor quality. If you get a good knife with a good blade, you shouldn't need several types of edges. If you do, you might need something other than a folding knife, like a sawzall or a pair of scissors. I agree it could be interesting, but not practical or likely.
I'm looking for a quality tactical blade fixed blade knife, is the EBK a good choice mich? For some reason I don't want a bowie style knife.
I'm trying to understand the laws in Cali. I know the magnum would be considered a misdemeaner under california laws, not sure about the tactical blade. I know some sites won't ship it to california, I thought that was because of the dble sided blade. I'm wondering if it counts as a dagger, because daggers qualify as an arrestable offense. I'm still reading the law so I don't wanna cross the midemeanor-felony line.

It's a nice knife, a very nice knife actually, but it is a dagger. I believe it would be a felony to carry openly or concealed.
I think Bowies are legal to carry openly in the PRK, although I could be very wrong. It should also be kept in mind that the police in that area are incredibly overbearing and tend to enforce their opinions instead of the actual law judging by what I've seen and heard. That's why I've always carried mine concealed in Kali, felony or not, I don't want police attention, and I sure as hell won't walk around Kali unarmed. Anyway, it is a serious mistake to disregard Bowies. A dagger isn't good at slicing, only stabbing. You'll find it to be a pretty useless toy, and an effective but felonious knife to carry for self defense. A Bowie type knife will slash, and chop much better a dagger, stab nearly as well if not just as well, and for some unfathomably stupid reason be more legal.

Just wondering, so according to the law as long as you don't go out into public with the "dagger" it is legal to own and keep within your home? What classifies a knife as a dagger? DANG!!! I wanted that EBK to carry around with me.
Where can I find 50$ range bowies? or "legal" knives?
I had also been thinking of the applegate fairburn tactical fixed blade, but maybe I'll get it someday for "the" collection.

Is the applegate fairburn gerber covert considered a dagger?
I find it interesting that california classifies switchblades as only a misdemeanor, yet from some cases I've read, people have been arrested and tried for carrying daggers, except arresting cops use the term "dagger" very loosely. Like a man was carrying a filet knife, and it was considered a dagger.

I'd have to make sockets to match the gnarled teeth on the pins...those things are designed to self-destruct if you tamper with them (basically making it impossible to disassemble at that point without destroying them). It's one of the few things Leatherman does that annoys me....I'd kill for allen bolts on em (and might do it if I find the right parts...heh custom leatherman, I like that idea).

As I said Jon, the police in the bay are ass holes who enforce their opinions, not the law.
I don't know the exact laws, Kali laws are krazy. I'd know them better if I lived there, but being from Michigan and never having bothered to follow the laws when I visited, I'm not too knowledgeable about that subject. You need to research that heavily if you want to make an informed decision.
A Covert or the full size Combat folder are not daggers so long as you don't sharpen the false edge.
If you want a cheap bowie, a Buck knife would be a good bet. Plus if you're willing to buy the cheap Chinese slave labor crap that is driving tons of American knife companies out of business, there are all kinds of options.
About the serrated AF dagger like mine you posted, it's a stabby knife. It's not meant to take camping or use to whittle, it's not meant for anything but killing people and not breaking in the process. It's very sturdy, and an excellent choice for a defensive only knife, but once again, it amounts to an impractical toy. I only carry mine on the Michigander. It was designed by Rex Applegate as a last ditch sidearm that would be far too sturdy to break in harsh combat conditions. If you really want one, you'd be a lot better off with the single sided kind for the utility of it and the laws. I regret buying the double sided version.

I'd drill it out, pull the pins with an easy out, then replace the pins with a nut and bolt, loctiting them into place. You'd have to use a tap and die set to make the bolt just right, but that's nothing difficult. Might not look as good, but it would be extremely functional.
And if you actually did take it apart, you might need to have a slightly sharpened rod the size of the pivot pin to realign the different tools into place when you put it back together. The leaf springs (if it has any, I've never handled that model) can be a real pain during reassembly.
And plus, if you wanted to get clever, you might be able to find the proper size replacement pivot pin for sale on the web. http://cgi.ebay.com/PRECISION-STAINLESS-PIVOT-PINS-FOR-FOLDING-KNIVES-1-4_W0QQitemZ300142805519QQcmdZViewItem
