Classic & Vintage - Question About Trek 510---1984 Model

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just picked up a very clean 1984 Trek 510. When I got it I noticed that it had mostly Campy Victory components, headset, brake levers, hubs, crank & pedals. He had 'upgraded' to Suntour Cyclone 7000 indexed shift levers, and F & R dérailleurs. It has Campy Record brake calipers with brand new Campy pads (not complaining). He had the Campy Victory dérailleurs and shift levers put aside, so I got those as well.

Since nearly everything on it was Victory, I assumed that was what came on it originally. Of course, I was wrong.

My question is, did Trek offer an upgraded version of the 1984 510, or did the owner just swap out all the original parts for the Victory components? The Victory hubs are laced to what appears to be the original Matrix Strada 27" rims, which I find a bit odd for an after market swap.

Anyone know?

Thanks to caterham for the info that Trek would do just about anything in 1984, and that their catalog specs are pretty much irrelevant.

It seem that perhaps it was built with Victory, or at least it may be likely it was.

I think our new member, caterham, deserves a big THANKS for all the info he has provided in the short time he has been here.

I hope I have the opportunity to shake his hand soon.

In early 1984 I bought a brand new red Trek 410 with Campy Triomphe. I think maybe Marty had a 510 with Victory in stock, but I might be off there. At any rate, it seems consistent that if the 410 had Triomphe, the 510 would have had Victory.

The 410, by the way, was an exceptionally nice riding bike. I foolishly sold it in an attempt to get something "faster," lemming that I was. Doh!

I like your theory, but I bought a 610 in 1984, and it came with Shimano 600 pre-Ultegra as listed. The 610 was available as frame only, so shop builds were enabled by Trek.

Old Fat,

I just looked on www.vintage-trek.com and the 1984 Sport brochure. Trek marked the 610 frame with an asterisk, but not the 510, 500, or 400. They offerred the 610 as a separate frame, but not the 510 or the lesser-ranked frames. Your 510 was retro-fitted as a new bike, or by an intermediate owner who bought whatever and did whatever to it. Not a bad set of choices, however!!

What, you've never seen Victory components, Matt?

Pictures tomorrow, I promise. The Campy Record brakes are off, and I'm looking for something suitable to put on. Do you have a set of Victory's in your basement treasure trove?

Oh yeah, you're a jerk, but I still like you!:D

Oh, and I'm pretty sure you'll tell me I suck when you see the pictures.

That's my final answer!

Okay, I'm looking more closely, and think they may be Triomphe, not Victory, and the brake calipers are definitely Triomphe, not Record.

The nuances of the Campy are much finer than those of Shimano. I'm slowly learning, though.

Big thanks to this excellent post from awhile back:

Thanks guys, Anyone know what the stem is?

Matt, just so you know I REALLY suck, it came with a complete Suntour Cyclone 7000 setup on it, F & R (long cage) dérailleur, indexed shifters and a spare cable in addition to the one on the bike, complete with boxes, Aaron!
