My first metric century! And what a thrill. A mass start of about 1,000 riders and ideal weather. Couldn't get any better.

I'm thinking about doing a metric century next Saturday. I'm not quite sure I'm ready for it though. I went out for 50 miles on a group ride today and I'm whipped. At 198 pounds, the hills just kill me. I averaged 15.2 mph today but I was with a slow group. I think I could have done it around 16.5 - 17.

My longest ride this season prior to the metric was 45 miles. I was concerned too. But during the ride I did take advantage of the rest stops, refueled, and got back on my way. I did reduce my pace a bit and averaged 14.5 mph over a relatively flat course. Where in MD are you riding? Formerly from Carroll County here.

Wasn't a tour that measured placement. There were multiple legs running from 15 miles to 100 miles. The hardest part was the mass start - so many bodies/bikes - just maintaing a line that didn't cross anothers. Other than that - avoiding a second helping of delicious Amish apple pie at a rest stop.

that is awesome dude... and I pet the pie helped carry you to the next rest stop.

I was at over 200 when I did the Ride for the Roses a year and a half ago, and that was a full 100 miles. If you do a supported ride, stop often and keep the food and gatorade flowing. If you're doing it with a local club or by yourself, do the same. Plot the gas stations along the way and plan to stop with some other folks in the group. You'll be fine if you pace yourself and eat and drink enough.

I'm in Frederick county. The ride is in Thurmont.

There are supposed to be some really big hills for the century ride so I'm definitely planning on doing the metric century.

I'm also riding a Fuji bike.

Good luck with those hills - traveled the ones in Carroll County plenty myself. Sometimes I miss them.
