Foo - Here's your million dollars! Now what would you do?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

You've just been handed 1 million (tax free) dollars in C notes. Don't ask where it came from, just know it's yours to do with as you wish. What's the first thing you would do? And the second thing...
Me? Someone actually hands me 1 million? Thank them, for one. Then if it's daylight and banks are still open, first thing I'd do is deposit the briefcase (it's always in a briefcase these days) in a safe deposit box, keeping a few 30 grand or so for spending cash. If it's at night, I hole up in a hotel until the banks are open. I'd need time to reflect on how my life has just changed and decide how I'm going to make the best of the situation. Probably the very first thing I would do is have a nice long dinner at one of my favorite posh places. While eating I'd probably make a call and immediately retire from my current employment. Next would be purchasing a new laptop with which to start all over again, then move into the hotel for a few weeks while I take the time to research money and investment issues. I'd search for websites with "Hey, I just won a million dollars and here's what I did with it!" type of stories. Oh, and I'd cancel my current cell phone account and get a new one. Then I'd open a bank account and deposit perhaps 50G, which should cover my living expenses for the forseeable future. Probably my first extravegant move would be flying to Hawaii for a week and doing the tourist thing, but with flare. Why not Brazil or the Greek islands? Cuz I don't have my visa yet, silly! It's only been two weeks! So basically I'd set myself up to do exactly what I want to do for work and recreation, and (modestly) living exactly where I want to live. I'd mostly make that 1 mil work hard for me. The charitable side of me would make sure my family won't suffer when times are tough. Oh, and I'd buy or build a killer road bike :D
So what would you do Foo?

travel the world to the most remote places, period. Just like that guy matt did when he danced all over the place.

Okay - not ALL of it, but at least half. After that .... I'd probably set up some sort of annuity. Yeah, I'm boring.

invest half, with help from my fiances family. Give 1/4 to my mom, take 1/4 and buy a house here in whistler, and work any job I want for the rest of my life, while skiing and biking year round.
Nope I haven't thought about this one bit.
I'd probably buy some land somewhere, build a nice little house on the property, and furnish the place modestly. I'd probably buy a few little toys, but I'd put most of it away.

Well thanks.
Lots of people would not haver to worry about going hungry or have to worry about staying warm this winter.
I'd purchase our commuter's society a permanent home for office space and the shop.
I'd pay off the house.
And I'd buy you a green coat... but not a real green coat cause that's cruel.

Invest all of it. Million is a lot but not that much, but it can easily be turned into a whole lot.

This HAS to be out of Cali, right?
call my investment manager and pay somebody to fix my project car.
Actually I`d buy a rental property since the market is flat as a pancake. Maybe about a 10-20 unit apartment building. Once the unit is rented and earning I`d buy another and another. Something small enough that I can manage it myself. I`d stay in my modest house and probably not make any lifestyle changes . I`m content with my life and I don`t need fancy/shiny stuff anyways.

Invest it all. Wait 10 years. Retire early and move to El Salvador.
This HAS to be out of Cali, right?Nope! Right in the middle of Golden Gate Park! :p
10 year, fixed rate, fixed deposit with a salary deducted from the interest and paid into a current account. The balance of the interest then re-invested either in the fixed account or in riskier, high yield, short term stuff.

Send every BF lady a two-way plane ticket for a trip to LA and a collective evening on the town, including hotel rooms, then give each and every one of them a kiss on the lips goodnight. Beats twins, doesn't it?

Good memory! But actually that picture stems from last year when I ebayed a lot of stuff to simplify my life. I`m down to 2 electrics and 1 acoustic. I`m even thinkin about gettin` rid of a couple Hummers and the Vette`s:rolleyes:

You know what I would do if I had a million dollars? I would invest half of it in low risk mutual funds and then take the other half over to my friend Asadulah who works in securities...

Exactly! Millionaires are supposed to be eccentric and creepy. And after each kiss I'd wipe my lips with an alcohol wipe. You know, in case of germs.

I'd knock over old ladies to get to Doolally's discarded briefcase.
I would then help the old ladies to their feet, and instruct one of them to scream, "that man stole my briefcase!!" I would then chase down x, tackle him to the ground, handcuff and taser him, and be hailed a hero. I would then marry the old lady (who turns out to be Jessica Biel in an old lady disguise to evade the paparazzi,) and we would buy an island in the Carribean and travel there regularly by train while x spent the last of his days stuck in Folsom Prison, where time keeps draggin on.
...and then you'd wake up, and realize it was all a dream! Ha!

Pay off my school loans, car debt, and credit card debt. The the remaining 970,000 and put 200,000 into an online personal stock account to play with. That leaves me with 770,000. Put 100,000 into a personal checking account. The remaining I would look for investments that are only available to the wealthy. This could be taking a board of directors position in certain companies, or similar investments. Take that 100,000 in my checking account and begin traveling the world.
When I'm done with my personal traveling, reap the rewards of my investments. Create or buy businesses I'm interested in. Begin a corporation of managing assets. Enjoy life.

I guess the first thing I'd do is try to figure out just how the hell I'm going to launder 10,000 $100 bills. Are they marked? Are the serial numbers being tracked?
If I report it, The Man will want a generous cut and will then want to know where I got it and "Don't ask where it came from" usually means that I really don't want to know where it came from. Chances are, in the end, The Man will appropriate every dime, including my legitimate assets, thanks to the War on Drugs.
Assuming the above doesn't happen and I figure out how to integrate it with my own assets without setting off any alarms, I'll then start worrying about where this money came from and who it belonged to before it was given to me and what they'll do to get it back. I mean, who in their right mind would give $1,000,000 in cash to a complete stranger? They must have had a pretty strong motive. Was someone chasing them? Is my family safe? Am I safe?
I think I have to agree with hookers and blow. This will use the money quickly so it's not around long enough to arouse too much suspicion. And nobody can really track money on the black market. And you can live the rest of your life knowing that you are in a rare club of extraordinary people who spent $1,000,000 in cash on prostitutes and cocaine. #3 on my list of Life Goals could then be checked off.
Pay bills, fix the house, buy a car, bike and motorcycle, kids college fund, and not have much left...

+1.
I'd also start looking for stocks that have been hammered to purchase. That's the 'Buy Low' part of that whole 'Buy Low Sell High' thing. That's how people who have a prayer to hold on to money operate. Sadly, many lotto winners buy a fancy car, go to Vegas, and wind up with nothing in a few short years.

buy some land, a house, a truck, a decent sound system... then i'd paint and see if i could make a living off of it. the house would be sound proof and tornado proof. other things as well. i guess i'd invest the left overs to see if i could get at least $20k a year out of them.
oh, and i'd pay off my $45,000 in student loans.

1/2 a million in an ING or similar low risk account.
1/4 of a million to buy a business for my family to work at and own.
10% donated to various charities and research organizations
and the rest i'd spend on me.
I could totally see myself paying down the house some, putting some money down on a new car
Buying some expensive stuff that i want to play around with and do research on
Maybe a 5 or 10k microscope
And the ultimate computer table, even if i have to have pay somebody to cut the metal frame and glass myself

Pay off all bills.
Buy 10 acres in the Ozarks.
Build an energy efficient, monolithic dome (http://www.monolithic.com/plan-design/monolithicdome/index.html) house.
Install solar panels and geothermal to get 95%+ off the grid.
Use remaining amount and my earnings to prepare for retirement.

Invest it and get a job doing what I want to do. ( I don't know what that is yet, but I'm guessing it wouldn't allow me to both live where I live and still be able to save for retirement. )
