I'm looking to get myself a new wheelset and I'm looking into Deep V rims, but I don't understand what the differences in machined and non-machined sidewalls are. Can someone tell me what this means and which may be better for a newly commited fixie lover?

Thanks!

It is my understanding a machined rim is one that has been sort of sanded down on the sides for a proper braking surface. I'm sure a machinist could give you a better description but if you are planning on running brake its better to go machined, if you don't go machined.. over time it will pretty much become machined from using the brake.

Machined sidewalls prepare the surface correctly for brake pads.
If you're going to use a brake, get machined rims.
If you're going brakeless, you can use non-machined rims.

Fashion note: very few bikes can pull off having a machined front and non-machined rear. If you have to ask, don't.

Edit: if you have to ask, then get machined, and geat a front brake.

the difference is, the machined rim has a surface for breaking. the bare metal is showing which looks nice, but not quite as cool as the rim without. if you are going to have brakes get the machined because brakes will not work as well on the non machined rim and brake marks will make it look bad. if you are only going to have one brake think about only getting a machined rim for the front wheel. Think of the future on this to. you may think you don't want a brake right now but you might later.

How about a filter that automatically redirects people to the search results page for "Deep V Machined" if someone tries to post with those words in the title.

Or we could stop posting in threads like this, and they'd be gone in a matter of hours. D'oh!

if you could just do this for every nubular post from now on, that'd be grandz0rz.
especially the really indignant newbie OP's who think they're super justified in asking
why they can't find information on any steel track frames.

Hello, I am newbzorz.... duhhh, if it wasn't for stupid newbie questions like mine you would never have had the practice in answering the question. By now you should be able to give an essay answer with references.

But really, thanks for the answers, it is easily understood now.
