I don't when I see there is no cross traffic coming, but Phil is correct. I can be ticketed for it just as I would be if in a car. We cyclists tend to forget that we are to follow all rules of the road - and all the same laws that motorists are expected to follow. It always annoys me when I meet cyclists who feel they are somehow above the law, yet they demand that motorists give them the same rights and respect their right to be on the road. If we expect the same rights as motorists, then we have to follow the same laws. Pure and simple.
+1 If anyone ever forgets why motorists hate cyclists so much, go on a group ride. Just last Saturday, for example, I was towards the front of the group approaching a red light and came to a stop behind the vehicle in front of me in the straight lane. 8-10 riders went past me and waited in the right hand turn lane, blocking the cars that had a green turn arrow. Someone in the back tried to yell at the front to get out of the way, but it was no use. It was some of the same people who were in the wrong lane that later complained about cars driving by too closely.
Why do some people think that laws only apply when it is in their favor?
To the OP, it doesn't matter how you justify it, the law says to stop and you didn't. If you feel a moral objection to the law, your only course of action is to try and get the law ammended or move to a country that has different laws. Do you know how many drivers have nicked or hit cyclists and claimed that we shouldn't be on the road? They feel the laws protecting us are lame ones, so if you can pick and choose which laws apply, so can they.

 EXACTLY! I can't tell you how many rides I've been on where this is the rule of the day. It's shocking to see, especially when it's coupled with the "screw you, I have a right to be out here on my bike" attitude toward those evil monsters we all call motorists.

Now that's just stupid and has nothing to do with breaking the law by blowing through a stop sign. And let me guess, any further discussion with you is going to turn into the "us vs. them" BS that is so pervasive on this forum and other cycling related forums.
Actually, no. You barely know me - so please don't make assumptions about the cliché "us vs. them". I drive, I own a car - I also cycle. I'm making no assumptions about you, and I'd expect the same respect on your part.

I certainly do!
And I usually write them on the bathroom walls, too.

I made the assumption based on what you posted, actually. You were insinuating that we should be able to open doors on motorists like they do on us. Seems pretty clear cut to me. As far as I was concerned, you were making an "ass" out of "u" and I just added the "mption." :p

I don't see any harm at all in going to court over tickets. I've done it a couple of times over the years to preserve my "perfect" driving record.
I wonder if the police are issuing more cycling tickets lately? I've been hearing a few more stories lately.

Catching up...seeing as how I seemed to have missed the party.
All: I occasionally drift through stop signs, and I have a signal on my normal route that notoriously never changes for me...so I blow through it. I fully accept that I could be given a life sentence for each offense. I will do the American thing and try to talk my way out of it or plea bargain a lesser charge.
prendendrou: I assume you have a battleship lodged in your netherregions. It's just an assumption, mind you, as I don't really know you...but judging from your few posts on this thread and how you became so indignant at those who interpreted your posts in a way that vexed you...I stand by my assumption. But go on with your bad self. Oh, and by the way, I don't argue on the internet. So...yeah. Woohoo! Carrots.
Scootcore: You're going to hell.
Thomson: You're going to hell.
ME: Oh, the things I've written about you on the bathroom walls...
alicestrong: Strangely enough, there are stopsigns on trails...generally if they have to cross roads or something. You should consider stopping at those.
Extort: Funny...I never saw you as such a whistleblower. ;) Remind me not to pop wheelies through intersections when you're around.
pmc: Sorry about the ticket...watch out for your ********, bud.

I'll back you on this one. You hate the net fights. My loss as you're damn fun to debate...up until you give up and back down, you wuss. Celery. :p
And you really should check with me before writing on any future walls. My prices have gone up. :D

I assume you are a fine negotiator.
And don't assume that I don't argue ever online...just when I realize I'm macroarguing with a microarguer, that's when I opt out. When my foe delves into the minutiae (sp?) of an issue, while I'm still arguing the entire issue...that's when I go looking for porn. Makes for better time spent.
(not assuming it's you who nitpicks the fine print of the big story)

Celery is better for dipping. Carrots turn you orange if you eat too many.
