....... for running a stop sign. We were flying I mean we were hauling @ss at less than 8 mph. My friend said we were going 5. We were in Redondo on the Esplanade some where around Ave F. The cop said our fault was not running the sign, because he doesn't expect us to put our foot down because it's so hard to get our foot unclipped but, doing so while pedaling. Did I mention we were going the blazing speed of 5-8 mph, at that speed I need to pedal just to stay up-right. He said we should have been coasting. Wow, I thought we were almost stopped at that speed. There was no traffic waiting at any of the signs, no one even close to or in the crosswalk.
So, does anyone know how much the fine will be?
thanks

My seventeen year old daughter just got her first auto driving ticket...not coming to a complete stop at a stop.
$177 plus traffic school...
Are fines lower for bikes? I'm an angel I never get cited so I wouldn't know...:D

What I do know about car tickets..
Running a stop/red is a healthy fine.
Speeding is half as much.
So drive fast, but be sure to stop.
Make sure the cop put "bicycle" on the ticket, that way it doesn't go against your driving
record ( points).
thats why I ride at the beach:)
I had to recheck. It does say bicycle.
Wow $177.

If you have to do traffic school you have to share your story in class. The teacher and students will get a fun laugh out of it.

Dude, if you're going to run a stop sign you should at least be smart enough to look around and make sure there aren't any police watching you.

+1. I once got a ticket for making a rolling stop, which I was certain was not true. I decided to fight the ticket, went before a judge or commissioner or whatever, asked him point-blank in open court if cops are under pressure to raise revenue for revenue-starved communities, and this guy looked me straight in the face and said NO.
I mean, I was expecting him to hem and haw around the truth, but he** no, he lied outright.
I ended up at traffic school, asked the instructor the same question at breaktime, and he, being a retired cop, told me YES. Cops are pressured in very subtle ways by their superiors to write those tickets, and plenty of them at that.
Oh, the rolling stop was in a car, not on a bike.

There is no quota (I believe they may be illegal), but when Officer Jones isn't giving enough tickets out by the end of the month, he's going to hear it from his CO.
really, don't they have anything better to do? drugs, killings, dui's....were you drunk? high?? did you run over anyone? At that speed, i'm sure you'd be the one hurt!!! Sorry.... hope you fight it, AND WIN!!!

If you didn't see the cop (I assume in a marked patrol car) before running the stop sign how good did you look ? Maybe the ticket will give you the incentive to take a good look before you run the next one. Who knows, maybe he saved your life on a future ride.

That depends on where the cop was, doesn't it? I don't know about you, but I look left, right, and straight ahead before crossing an intersection, but rarely behind me.

oh man.... time to trade in the fixed gear... I can't coast a stop sign on it.
Reminds me of when I was in junior high... when joking around about stopping at stop signs I would bunny off and clip the brakes to stop the tires in mid air.... sounds good enough for that officer.

I ride that stretch of road multiple times per week as do hundreds of other cyclist. I have NEVER seen a cyclist make a complete stop at a stop sign on Catalina or the Esplande, unless of course a vehicle got to the intersection first. I'm totally bummed to hear that you got a ticket... I have no idea how much it will be, but will definitely be looking out for black and whites in the future.

I just heard that Laguna Beach hit a guy with a $395.00 fine for blowing a red light while on his bike... too bad that I don't have confirmation via a web link.... only an e-mail...

Have never seen a Stop sign that said 'pedal thru' or 'coast' they all read STOP.
What part of STOP do you not understand? So, stop or pay up . . . you made the choice!
No stop signs on Mountain bike trails....
Ride the dirt and forget about "the man"....

I just received an wkly email from the local club here at south bay.
"Warning corner: FYI Last Sunday morning a Redondo Beach policeman stopped in at Aviation Cyclery and Erik (the owner) was kind enough to pass along the officer comments… “The chief of Redondo Beach PD has told all his officers to start writing citations to all cyclists who are blowing stop signs and not obeying the rules of the road. He specifically said that they are targeting road bikes primarily along the Esplanade.” The officer asked me to communicate this to anyone that I know. They would rather not write the $250 tickets and wanted the cyclists to be aware. "
Looks like we need to pay more attention on the road from now on.

I've gotten out of 3 tickets (all of them being cited while on a bicycle). Two for running red lights / stop signs, another for a "illegal right hand turn on a red" (when really, I just didn't stop for the red before turning).
OP, PM me if you'd like to attempt to get out of this ticket. Or you can simply stick around this thread for a while and spend time with the hearsay and anecdotes.

You put that last offence in "Quotes" like that is not really an infraction....
running a red light / stop sign wether you are going strait or turning is still RUNNING A RED LIGHT / STOP SIGN. Own up to your own stupidity and pay the fines.

You are entitled to your opinion regarding the infractions that I did commit. However, you do not know the circumstances of these infractions, do you? No, you don't.
Remember, the phrase "assumptions make an ass out of you and me?" Please don't make any assumptions.
Do I think cyclists should run through red lights or stop signs? No, not always. Not most of the time. Under certain circumstances/instances, where it is entirely safe to do so: yes, it can be done with caution.
Again, please do not assume the circumstances, nor the situation before passing judgment. This can be applied to many aspects of your life, keep that in mind. Please.

I didn't make assumptions.. you stated that you ran the red light while turning which is illegal... Telling me that I do not know the circumstances is a clever way to say that you have an excuse for your actions.
Every operator of a vehicle should follow the rules of the road... That means that you can proceed through a red light if it does not change, but only if it is safe to do so. It also means that you completely stop your bike when at a stop sign or red light... If you decide not to follow the rules of the road, then you should expect to pay the consequenses if you get caught and ticketed.

I have to admit that I didn't completely stop just slowed at two stop signs last night..(Oh 'round ten o'clock when the side streets are completely deserted in my suburban bedroom neighborhood)
Tell the truth. Does everyone here stop on their bike under those circumstances?

I don't when I see there is no cross traffic coming, but Phil is correct. I can be ticketed for it just as I would be if in a car. We cyclists tend to forget that we are to follow all rules of the road - and all the same laws that motorists are expected to follow. It always annoys me when I meet cyclists who feel they are somehow above the law, yet they demand that motorists give them the same rights and respect their right to be on the road. If we expect the same rights as motorists, then we have to follow the same laws. Pure and simple.

No, but I wouldn't complain if I got a ticket. If you're gonna dance, you better be prepared to pay the band.

No, I would run the stop sign... and if I got caught doing it, I'd pay the fine cause I was stupid enough to let a cop witness it and pull me over.

I think that sums it up. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a roadie who doesn't run the occasional stop sign or red light. Just don't whine about it or act surprised when you get a ticket.
You may be able to get the ticket dismissed in court and good on ya. But I would prefer to look in all directions (including behind me) for police rather than spend time in a court room.

I also think that there should be a way that cyclists can open their equivalent of a car door on a passing car, you know, by accident. Hey, they do it by 'accident' (if accident implies not looking for traffic before opening the vehicle's doors), so we should also follow suit. Somehow... hmmm....

Now that's just stupid and has nothing to do with breaking the law by blowing through a stop sign. And let me guess, any further discussion with you is going to turn into the "us vs. them" BS that is so pervasive on this forum and other cycling related forums.
